GooReader launched, supports Google Books

12:51 PM by Nate the great in E-Book General | News

A new reading app for Google Books was just announced today. It's called GooReader and it interfaces directly with the Google Books website. It comes in both paid and free versions.

I just posted an early review over on my blog. I'm not impressed. I really have to wonder what's the point. You can download these books as PDFs. I have a couple really good PDF readers and this wasn't any better.

Colour E-Ink hitting the market by the end of the year?

12:01 PM by m-reader in E-Book General | News

Here we go ...

E Ink Holdings, the company behind the power-sipping screens contained within Amazon's Kindle and Sony's Readers, is keeping to its schedule for the biggest overhaul of its display technology yet. Color panels are reportedly now sampling out to device vendors and China-based Hanvon has already answered the call -- it promises to deliver color E Ink readers by the end of this year. Two varieties of touchscreens are also being prepared: the first is a capacitive panel to sate the kids' need to flick and swipe everywhere, while the second will include a pen-friendly digitizer that should make annotations a doddle (or should that be a doodle?). Better response times and reflectivity are also being touted, though the big question is obviously when this good stuff will make its way into mainstream devices like the Kindle. If you believe Jeff Bezos, that won't be any time soon.

Highlights are mine ...

German Hanvon's showing a new ereader

05:00 PM by Geppetto in E-Book General | News

German Hanvon website (not the English one: how strange) is showing a new ereader I've never heard of before: WISEreader B630

looks like a 6" N520, in fact.

I wonder how many different models (for different markets) they made.

UK Kindle ebook store Now Open

04:58 PM by pdurrant in E-Book General | News

The UK Kindle ebook store is now open for business. Amazon are also offering to transfer UK customer's Kindle store accounts from Amazon.com to Amazon.co.uk.

I've just done clicked the button to start this process. Hopefully it will be painless. The UK store has prices in £, not $.

Most prices seem to be a simple conversion from $ to £, with an exchange rate of about $1.55:£1. The current rate shown at xe.com is $1.58:£1, so it's not too bad at all.

It will be interesting to see how frequently Amazon update the UK price as the exchange rate changes.

Some UK prices are cheaper — as sometimes a cheaper paper version is available in the UK which isn't available in the US.

e.g. The Penguin Classics version of Kidnapped is $6.06 is the US Kindle store (including the 17.5% VAT for UK customers) but is only £1.89 in the UK Kindle store.

And no doubt some UK prices are higher.

Amazon Releases Games for Kindle

04:52 PM by M_Agnum in E-Book General | News

Amazon is now offering two word puzzle games for Kindle--Every Word and Shuffled Row. They are free, so we encourage you to check them out.

"If you like word scrambles then Every Word is the game for you. Test your vocabulary as you try to find as many words from the scrambled letters in this fun and fast-paced word game."

"In Shuffled Row see how many words you can make from 60 lettered tiles. The tiles are added to your row one at a time so you'll constantly be working with a new set of letters. After you submit a word, the letters you used will be removed and new ones will be added. Increase your score by using less common letters. Create longer words and increase your score even more."

I just downloaded them and am going to give them a test run.
