Fingernails: Your Newest Storage Media?

01:18 PM by Bob Russell in Miscellaneous | Lounge

There hasn't been a lot to get excited about with regard to storage media recently. Nothing really stood out much after Hitachi's perpendicular storage with the cute cartoon video. But now there's a totally unexpected new angle. Who would have thought that fingernails can do data storage in the megabytesbits?!

As soon as they recover from the Slashdot effect, you may be able to find more info at the link below.

Secure optical data storage could soon literally be at your fingertips thanks to work being carried out in Japan. Yoshio Hayasaki and his colleagues have discovered that data can be written into a human fingernail by irradiating it with femtosecond laser pulses. Capacities are said to be up to 5 mega bits and the stored data lasts for 6 months - the length of time it takes a fingernail to be completely replaced."

ClipMe iSilo plugin for non-IE browsers!

11:41 AM by struesda in Archive | iSilo/X

I like iSilo as an offline Web reader, but one thing that has been lacking is the ability to quickly send a website from Firefox or Opera to iSilo.

While browsing the freeware available at PalmGear I stumbled on ClipMe, which is a very nice little utility that allows not only sending websites to iSilo from any browser, but also copying any text into a Palm Memo without using Palm Desktop.

Pay close attention to the install instructions because it requires separate installs of iSiloXC for the iSilo functions, and a Java Conduit support component for the Memo function - but it's worth the bit of extra work.

Now I have the ability of HandStory to clip things easily from a browser or a system tray - for free!

Hot off the press, PalmSource has revealed the identitiy of it's new licensee.... LG. That also happens to be my own favorite big-name phone maker.

IYHY mobile Web proxy

07:24 AM by Colin Dunstan in Miscellaneous | Lounge

IYHY is another Skweezer-like tool allowing you to strip away non-essential HTML code, CSS styles, and images from regular Web pages while surfing with a mobile device.

IYHY is an attempt to fix the mobile web today instead of one or five years from now. If you sign-up IYHY will keep a running, editable list of your "mobile bookmarks". If you don't sign-up, that's cool too, IYHY will just strip all the crap from a web page and give you the good stuff when you're on the go -- the content.

Note: IYHY is extremely beta and links may be broken on certain sites that use lots of redirects, etc. It's a work in progress, to be sure.

BatteryUniversity practical battery knowledge

06:12 AM by Colin Dunstan in Miscellaneous | Lounge

BatteryUniversity.com is an on-line resource that provides practical battery knowledge for engineers, educators, students and battery users alike. The papers address battery chemistries, best battery choices and ways to make your battery last longer.

Nevermind the fact that the site is sponsered by battery analyzer and charger maker Cadex Electronics, it is a wonderful free resource for everyone who is concerned with the right treatment of their gadget batteries (a topic that can lead to endless discussions because even battery vendors don't seem to always agree on this).

Plucker e-books on the Nokia 770 platform - update

05:50 AM by Colin Dunstan in E-Book Software | Reading and Management

Roger kindly messaged me regarding his slideshow presentation of using Plucker and Plucker Distiller on the Nokia 770 platform (Maemo). He updated the slides with more how-tos on the actual "distilling" process, i.e. the process where you convert your desktop documents into the Plucker format.

If you have any comments or suggestions feel free to contact him over at the great blog Teleread.org.
