Well, reading in the surf... it's waterproof, but is it also sand and salt proof? I mean, e-ink screens are fragile. I would be careful wiping water off the screen, or you could easily scratch it if it has sand or salt in it.

Amazon could freeze the PW too, and say that only premium devices get upgrades and new features. Will they?

Or they could just use the same software for both the "basic" Paperwhite and a new premium model... You cannot strip much from a model that only has touch screen and on-off button anyway...

I will welcome the freezing of updates to my PW1 if it means that a better hardware model is coming.

The paperwhite will operate fine inside of a 5 cent zip lock bag. I would not pay even $20 more for a 'water proof' model. I just don't read in those environments (no beaches or baths). And even the Aura H20 is not waterproof at any depth. If it sinks to the bottom of a pool, it could still be damaged.

Amazon already has a basic line frozen in development in every respect, for the low-end group, and the Touch/PW line of decent devices with modern tech, with active development, with hardware upgrades and matched with software innovation (to watever extent that may matter). If they made a premium waterproof model, they must either freeze the Touch/PW line of middle-class Kindles, or keep both lines in active HW/SW development. Either edge out the majority of buyers in favor of a premium line, or commit to developing and marketing two Kindles. And Amazon doesn't strike me as interested in doing so.

Don't know how many here use their Kindle with the leather-finished cover from Amazon. I do this daily and am happy with the added protection while commuting, the leather feel, the turn-off with the front cover - and nowadays find the device itself rather flimsy. So I surely would have a decco at a new Kindle if it would be cased directly in such a cover to check if dimensions and weight feel alright for me.

It's all too quiet on the western front. But then, I don't remember if we usually get rumors prior to kindle releases. There were lots of leaks about the 3d kindle phone, though.

That is because Amazon does not usually release anything official prior to having a finished product that is ready for mass production and passed certification. I rather have no leak, than a leak that is false. And if the leak is true, I would still have to wait. It is very unlikely that Amazon has nothing to compete. Competitors early leaks and releases gives Amazon the option to strategically market which features are superior on their device.

For me to upgrade from my PW1 Same form factor as the PW1/2 so my existing case fits Better screen lighting Improved image quality contrast/resulution Faster page turn However the biggest improvement would be software, why oh why cant I manage the collection and such from my PC. When I put a book in a colloection I'd like it to dissappear from the home screen. |

 Collections

I also would really, really like to be able to manage my collections from my desktop. I actually like the changes in collections...now that they sync among devices, I only keep a few books on my PW unless I know I'm going to be out of Wifi reach for a while. But it's a pain to manage the collections from the PW.
