I just spent 15 mins on e-chat to Kobo about this issue. They recognised it - but said they are still "gathering information" and took details of PC - Windows and device drivers.
It would be good if all who had the issue reported it to Kobo so that they can get past information gathering and into fixing. DNSB - thanks for the potential fix using windows - I'll try that tomorrow when I've finished my current book Dave |

Kobo doesn't need to gather information. The problem is with the format and Win 10AU. That's all the information they need. All they need to do is figure out what program running on the Kobo doesn't do a proper format and replace it with one that does. Kobo can easily fix a factory reset issue by making it so you have to update and maybe reformat.

"gathering information" sounds like "I am not able to solve your problem, but please don't give me a negative review just because it's above my abilities."

gathering information is "we don't have a fix yet so we'll say we need more information until we do have a fix".

Gathering information............................
Couldn't agree more . If the people on this forum can come up with workarounds so quickly, then Kobo developers ought to be able to do the same. At the very least I would have expected to see something on their website. I would be very disappointed if I had bought a Kobo today , brought it home and found my PC wouldn't be able to set it up ! And we haven't actually worked out why it is happening. All we know is that Win10AU doesn't like something about the partition that the Kobo device is presenting it. We don't know what it is that is wrong. Is it the partition, or the file system? Or something else. Kobo need to come up with a solution that any user at any level of competence can do. And preferably without losing data. It probably will need a format of the partition, but, hopefully it won't need a factory reset. The solution also has to survive a factory reset. And it has to continue to work with Macs. And hopefully continue working with Linux machines. |

"Survive a factory reset" == "overwrite the backup firmware", no?
... I still cannot get over how Microsoft manages to mess up detection of USB Mass Storage devices... after they already had it working for a decade... |

- Reboot using the recovery partition and associated kernel. - Format the root partition and the user partition. - Unpacks the "firmware" files from the recovery partition to the root partition. - Writes the uboot and kernel from the recovery partition to the appropriate sectors of the internal storage. - Triggers a reboot from the root partition. There are a few ways to trigger a factory reset and because of this, it is actually hard to truly brick the Kobo devices. But, Kobo do not update the recovery partition, so the factory reset always takes the device back to the out of factory state. Part of the setup after this downloads the latest firmware. Quote:

Yes, that is rather my point. In order for the partition fix to survive a factory reset, it would have to be fixed in the backup firmware as well.
So basically what I was saying is, I don't see how Kobo can fix it on their end. ![]() Or at least, fix it in a way that doesn't require OTA updating in order to get a Kobo that works with your Win10 computer. |

I think Kobo have updated the recovery partition at least once. The were a batch of Touch devices that wouldn't update past a particular version. Kobo special firmware version just for these, and it solved whatever the issue was. I always assumed it updated the recovery partition as whatever they did survived a factory reset. So, it can be done, they just need to be extra careful. |

There is always one other solution. That is to write a USB driver for Kobo devices for Win 10AU. That would solve the problem.

Based on Frostschutz's investigations here it appears that the current Kobo firmware is writing to part of the FAT filesystem that it should not be. (see this doc esp. section 3.3, for reference on FAT fs)
In Win10AU MS have decided to enforce some checking where previously they did not. If, as has been speculated, this is as protection against malware then you can expect them to also disallow drivers that try to bypass this check. I was reading just the other day that drivers from now on will have to be submitted to MS for signing. The proper fix for this is for Kobo to update their firmware to stop messing with the reserved part of the FAT filesystem. They are apparently working on a firmware update so that's good. |
