Windows 8, 64 bit doesn't recognise M92 e-book reader

Hoping for some advise on how to troubleshoot this...

I'm using a good USB port, on my stationary PC at home.
Tried with a different USB cable and in different USB ports.
Using Device Manager "Scan for hardware" changes doesn't seem to pick it up either...

It was a couple of years since I used Calibre, but I seem to remember that it clearly notified when the reader was connected. Here, it doesn't even have Onyx in the wizard's list of devices.

Never had this problem with my old ebook reader.
I can't figure this out and I would be really grateful for advise.

The device will only be recognised if the actual USB cable is connected while the device is powered on, and active.

Standby mode is not good enough, or just generally turned on. It has to be active.
Likewise, you must plug in the cable while the device is turned on, you cannot plug in the cable and then turn it on.
