Hey guys.
SORRY IN ADVANCE BUT THIS IS A LONG ONE... ![]() ![]() I have a Kobo Glo, have had it since released (in 2012/2013) and am very happy with it. I read daily and update my books frequently from my laptop via Calibre. The other day wanted to add a new book to it and couldn't as I am now getting the "Windows doesn't recognise the USB device" message. It still connects though (ie the device thinks it is connected to the laptop) and charges which is just confusing... so as long as I just want to read my Pocket content or read direct from Kobo (which I hate as I prefer to mess with my books in Calibre first) I will be ok! I have 3 different USB cables that I have tried, and also tried all of the 4 USB ports on my laptop, soft reset the device a number of times and have now done a factory reset (which has of course deleted all the books I had on it) but still nothing! I have also tried to update the drivers on my laptop, but the message tells me that the drivers already installed for the device are up to date. This is all very frustrating as it still works but it's now empty and I can't add anymore from my laptop. I have an extensive ebook library on my laptop (managed via Calibre as I have already mentioned) that I have had for a number of years and would gladly sync wirelessly if I knew how to wirelessly connect to the laptop and therefore Calibre... Have tried to set up a Dropbox/Calibre2opds libary but can't get the opds to work. Have even tried to dl direct from my dropbox via the built in web browser but this just doesn't want to work either. My android phone, digital camera and other USB devices I have all connect to my laptop without any problems so I know that the laptop is not at fault. I don't have the spare cash to get a new one at the moment and even if I did the fact the device seems to work is so frustrating! Am soo close to pulling my hair out. PLEASE WHAT DO I DO??? ![]() Last edited by ilovereading.com; 08-04-2016 at 12:27 PM. |

Are you running Windows 10 and did you upgrade to the Anniversary Update? If so, you're not alone.

The answer is likely what rtiangha said.
Do a search in the Kobo forum here re:dropbox. IIRC to get dropbox to work these days apparently you have to change either to or from the mobile version once you sign in to or something like that to allow you to download. |

I can't help with the Windows 10 issue, but you can connect to calibre with KOReader.
The KOReader OPDS function works well with the calibre Content Server. There is also a calibre Wireless Connection function that lets you wirelessly have a device in calibre, much like a USB connection. Even if you only used KOReader to provide ebooks for the stock Kobo readers, it might serve your needs. Luck; Ken |

You should be able to use the built-in browser to download from the Calibre content server. It doesn't require any setup itself, but you might need to do something in Windows security settings to allow connections. If there is nothing blocking connections then you just select "Connect/Share > Start Content Server" in Calibre, then select "Connect/Share" again to see the address/port to use, and then enter the address and port in the Glo's browser, e.g. something like 192.168.1.64:8080
You should be able to download from DropBox too, but need to switch to desktop mode after logging in, then tap the file to select, then tap the download button at the top of the page. See screenshots in this post. Also someone reported that the micro-SD card was still recognised by Windows 10 after the update, so maybe you can copy books via USB by inserting a micro-SD card into the Glo, plugging the Glo into the Windows 10 computer, and copying books to the card instead of the internal storage. I don't know how Calibre will handle this though, you might need to use "Save to disk" to export the book from Calibre then copy it manually to the card. |

And no, I don't think doing a factory reset, re-installing the Kobo desktop app, editing random registry entries or any of the other suggestions I've received will do any good. Though the one about placing my ereader on top of my laptop and dancing skyclad widdershins around them at midnight on the night of the new moon did have the benefit of being good for a laugh—the ![]() |

If you are now running Windows 10 Anniversary edition, you may want to roll it back to the previous version Windows 10 while you still can.

I had that problem on Windows 10 with my Glo HD. Here is the solution.
Download and install the Kobo desktop app (https://www.kobo.com/desktop). Launch the app. Plugin your Kobo device. It should now mount without issue and show up on the Kobo app. Launch Calibre. It should recognize your Kobo device. When you're done eject the device not through windows nor Calibre but through the Kobo app. This problem has happened to many people that upgraded (as opposed to clean install) to Windows 10. It's not specific to the anniversary update which I have not done yet. Also I have not had any problems with my Aura H2O, go figure. |

Oh wow, so many replies already.
THANK YOU so much, am gonna go through each one and see how to sort this out. I am on Win 7 64bit, have not upgraded to Win 10 due to all scaremongering regarding lack of privacy and Chrome/Edge issues... and I might as well wait until getting a new laptop to change OS. I was on Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit until last week and my Glo HD worked fine. Dumb question, but have you tried rebooting your laptop (not hibernate or sleep, but reboot)? Whenever I get USB device connection issues, removing the device and rebooting seems to fix things.

Well, I've got nothing except to open up Device Manager, plug your Kobo in and see if an error pops up in the device tree. Even if one doesn't, I'd right click on the Kobo device and click on "Uninstall Driver," unplug the Kobo, reboot, open up Device Manager and then re-plug in the Kobo to see if it'll work then. It's weird that it would stop working after awhile.

Maybe you could run Linux from DVD, CD disc or USB memory stick and install calibre to this linux virtual computer running on your windows computer. Then maybe use Calibre and Kobo Store without problems. I can't try this because my new computer with windows 10 now only has linux.
