A Fire isn't a Kindle. It's a custom Android Tablet. Amazon did call it a Kindle Fire for a while which caused confusion.

I didn't have a problem. When I went to visit my parents, they had good Internet.

The Fire HD 10 is very different from a Kindle eInk ereader which is what I thought you were referring to. It's been close to 8 years since Amazon dropped the Kindle Fire name and went with Fire (Aug or Sep 2014 if I remember correctly).

I generally just keep my ereader in a jacket pocket and so far haven't had any issues with airport security other than one gentleman at a US airport who insisted I open it and let him look through the books on it to ensure it worked and was really an ereader.

I love my 17" laptop (Lenovo P17) but have to admit it will not win any prizes for lightness or compactness.

I updated Kindle for iOS the the new version 6.64 released today. It now allows sending EPUB files on the device and gives a warning that MOBI files will be blocked from being sent later this year.

Sorry for being so dense, but what does it mean "It now allows sending EPUB files on the device"?

Same thing for the Android version of the app.

"Send to Kindle" will now show up as one of the options when you share an epub file using a file browser (at least on android).

As hleo12 wrote it shows up in the sharing menu for EPUB files. For example if you have an EPUB attachment in an email you can click on it to share it to the Kindle app, just like you can for MOBI files. There is a popup dialog with options to change the title, author, destination, and to add it to your library.

The EPUB is sent to Amazon's servers and delivered back to Kindle for iOS in MOBI format. Kindle for iOS does not support KF8 (azw3) and Send to Kindle does not convert to the better AZK/KCR or KFX formats.

I'm disagreeing that KFX is any good. It's garbage. I'd rather the iOS app handled KF8.

AFAIK, it's mobi maybe because KF8 looks too much like non-Safari web-engine?
Or some such stupid Apple reason. It's unlikely to be what Amazon wants.

Ooh! Well, that's useful. Thank you, jhowell and hleo12!

Oh, the irony! Amazon won't accept MOBI, but will accept EPUB only to send it back to Kindle for iOS as MOBI

Epub has been Amazon preferred upload for publishing for years with docx as 2nd. Acceptance of reflowable mobi for publishing ended ages ago. So they seem to be making the "Send to Kindle" use the same sort of infrastructure as Amazon KDP (the Publishing upload for all but big publishers).

I'm sure it's an Apple issue that they deliver mobi (used on prehistoric kindles K1, K2, DG, DXG etc before K K3 with later firmwares) for iOS. They'd certainly prefer to deliver azw3/KF8 or KFX.

Why would the Kindle app's lack of KF8/KFX be an Apple problem?

It is thought that KF8 never came to iOS because it is based on an outdated version of WebKit and Apple specifically disallows apps from containing their own version of WebKit. Instead Amazon created AZK/KCR format which is very similar to KF8 but uses the HTML renderer built into iOS. This is not an issue for KFX because it is not based on HTML.

Amazon could convert customer's EPUBs to KFX or AZK/KCR but they don't. Responsibility for that lies totally with Amazon.
