Load the ePub in Calibre's editor or Sigil and you can edit the OPF file. It's very easy to spot the author's name and the title.

In Calibre, select your book then use "Edit Ebook" to open up the epub editor. Or use Sigil.

Then select the file with the extension .opf (e.g., content.opf)

Once you have the .opf file open, as JSWolf says, the author name and title are easy to spot, and you can change them to whatever you like.

Thanks.
But once I open "Edit EPub" in Calibre and I get the page shown in the attached screen capture, where do I go?... Nothing in the scrolling menus says I can change the author or title, all I can do apparently is edit the text of the ebook (something I've done occasionally to repair irritating spelling mistakes for instance).

Down the bottom on the left side is a file with .opf. Double click it and you van then edit it.

OK, I found it, rather well hidden and a bit of an ordeal to do on a regular basis, but thanks.
But does it essentially do the same thing as when using "change metadata", which I thoroughly do for all my ebooks before converting them to Mobi (basically retaining correct author's name in correct order, correct title correctly capitalized, and language, and nothing else - see enclosed pic -), or does it go "deeper" and change things "more thoroughly" ? I ask because I noticed that when I send the EPub file to someone by mail after changing its metadata, its original name remains unchanged.

Not sure if this has been documented before, but I found an error that couldn't be fixed with calibre's EPUB to EPUB conversion. If the NCX has target with #hash to the ID of <body> in the target document, conversion will fail with unresolved hyperlink. Tested with Kindle Previewer 3.66. AFAIK this only happen in NCX file --- linking with <a href=""> inside HTML is fine.

I am thinking of improving https://kindle-epub-fix.netlify.app/ to handle other kind of common problems so I am investigating various problematic EPUBs.

Those are often created when a KF8 (azw3) file is converted to EPUB using calibre.

It's best IMHO to use the KindleUnpack plugin to shift KF8 to ePub. Then load the ePub into the editor and check for errors using Calibre error checker and epubcheck. In most cases, the errors will be easy to fix. If there are too many errors or you need to split HTML files, you can try ePub > ePub and see what happens.

I presume they’ve still not made it so books emailed to the kindle show the cover on the library page of the kindle?

Because the kindle I want to read it on is 500 miles from me and not mine. My sibling allows me to use it when I go stay with my elderly and terminally ill mother who doesn't have broadband. Sibling downloads it for me on their own home wifi (without it appearing on or affecting their Amazon account). I can then read it and delete it from their device, again without involving their Amazon account. Plus, with no broadband at my mother's, I don't take my kindle or my laptop, which is where my calibre library is stored so I can't physically transfer by USB. This was the only workaround/compromise I could think of.

Why not take your Kindle or your laptop? Is there some reason you can't preload the books to your Kindle that you want to read during your stay instead of uploading them to DropBox to be downloaded to another Kindle for reading?

Personally, I've often used my ereaders and laptop without network connectivity so while limiting, I don't see it as a reason to not use your devices.

I would bring my Reader and laptop and my cell phone. I would be able to hotspot my phone to my laptop (hopefully).

Luggage/baggage/weight allowance. Trying to minimise what I take cos I have a LOT to take clothes wise as I'm there for a month at a time and can borrow a kindle or a laptop whilst there if needed. I rarely use my devices without network connectivity so would have to take it a relative's house or to a coffee shop with free wifi to do so. I can then do my emails on my phone and check in with friends looking after my house. It's a very small screen though so not suitable for reading on. Plus just take my smart phone but it's too small to read on and not enough storage to put calibre on it either. I'm often lucky if I get the TIME to read there anyway as care is a 24/7 job.

But you've given me the idea of preloading them onto an OTG dual USB/micro usb flash drive rather than Dropbox and taking the flash drive with me to load onto my sibling's kindle without needing broadband or data. In fact, if I've probably got a big enough one to load my entire Calibre library onto it (about 6.5k books and counting)! OR, maybe a micro sd card than I can insert and read from.

Always good to put out there what you do yourself to see if anyone has better ideas or triggers another idea for your situation, so thanks for your input. I'll ask my sibling to download a File Manager onto his kindle in advance of my next visit.

My laptop is a 17inch screen. My kindle a Fire HD10. Too big, bulky and weighty to fit in. I only have a monthly 1GB data allowance which I don't want to have to overwrite by then also buying a regular (and expensive on top of all my other costs to get there every and back every month).

I would love to be able to but am pretty restricted by size, weight and costs ... and as I said, if needed, a kindle and laptop are easy to borrow when I get there.

PS I did try it once (bought an unlimited package) and tethered it but the signal and speed were so slow that when my data provider checked it, they refunded me the whole cost without me even asking for it. Plus when anyone with a smart phone came near me, they too automatically jumped on my unlimited data and slowed down even further. I couldn't even open my emails!! So to save weight and money, decided to borrow instead and go to them for wifi.
