Kobo Aura doesn't start

Hi all. I'm hoping you can help me out. I recently bought an used Kobo Aura. Was unable to check if it's working as the battery was down. First issue was inability to connect to my home broadband. After entering the password it freezes. Thought I will connect to my PC and install kobo app. The registration went well but it still keeps freezing and wouldn't start. It only shows three dots like it's processing something and only if it's connected. Once disconnected it freezes again. I suspect it's a software issue but no clue how to fix it. Any ideas? Thx.

No idea if the Aura has eMMC or MicroSD but an image might help.

Trouble is this one does not have an SD card in it.

Have you tried the manual factory reset procedure? It's a bit of a pain since it involves using the manual reset pinhole 5 times (reset, wait till it gets to home screen, repeat 4 more times). After the 5th time, it should show a critical error and go into a factory reset.

Just tried that and after restarting the three dots reappear. I made up to 10 attempts I believe. It looks like someone have totally formatted it and removed OS.

Forgot to mention the orange light flashes and the "reading" dots appear when kobo is connected to a PC or plugged to a charger. Once disconnected is freezes.

No, if it has gotten that far, then the OS is definitely installed and getting a reasonable distance into starting up.

That sounds like a dead battery. If things are happening when plugged in, but stop when you unplug them, the likely cause is the battery.

It could just need a factory reset. The method @DNSB doesn't always work as it requires the device to boot to a certain point. For the Aura, you can use the buttons:

Charge the device for at least an hour.
For the device to be off by holding the power button down for about 20 seconds.
Hold the light button down and turn the device on.
Release the light button when the screen changes or the power LED does.

All the steps are important. If it doesn't work, try again but hold each step a little longer. And it should work when plugged in.

Step 2 caused the e-reader to freeze. I did step 3 and 4 and while restarting it got frozen again. When I unplug and plug it again it restarts and three dots appear and you can start over.

Sorry for double post. I was thinking if it shows some reaction while being connected but immediately freezes after disconnecting it then perhaps all it needs is a new battery.

That definitely points to battery problems. With that, I would try steps 3 and 4 immediately after plugging it in. The Kobo devices will normally wake or start up a short period of time after plugging them in. If you wait to long, you will need to do the power off.

I have also sent you a link to the image for a Kobo Aura H2O. A few people have had luck getting an Aura running by writing the image to an SD card and the putting it in the external SD card slot and starting the device. If it works, it at least proves the device can work. And you can possibly get it working without the card once it is running. But, I don't know those steps.

Thanks. So I inserted an SD card with an image. It looked promising at first but it froze after few seconds and looks like on the attached pic. It looks like the screen is a problem and not the battery (unless both).
