MobileRead E-Book Genre Lists

07:08 AM by BenG in Miscellaneous | Announcements

Inspired by the Project Gutenberg Bookshelves, I've made a list of books available on Mobileread sorted by genre. No mainstream literature titles, just Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Mystery/Suspense, Horror, Westerns, Adventure, Travel, Poetry, Humor, etc.

I haven't read all these books, so I have relied on the posters' descriptions of the books and/or the author's reputation. I'm sure there are some mistakes and omissions so let me know if you see any.

Rumor: Is this Apple's new Newton or UMPC?

05:43 PM by Bob Russell in E-Book Readers | Alternative Devices

David Sieger from SeekingAlpha is attempting to assemble information about a possible future device from Apple, that could be Newton or UMPC-like.

Here are some highlights:

  • 5.2" 800 x 480 pixel touch screen
  • Probably an on-screen keyboard
  • Held in landscape orientation with both hands on the ends
  • Could ship in the second half of 2008, say 6-8 months after an appearance outside the Apple labs.

Wired.com Top Ten Gadgets of 2007

08:15 PM by Nate the great in E-Book General | News

The Kindle is #10 of the Heartbreaking Gadgets. Here is what they said:

It doesn't seem quite right to call Amazon's electronic-book tablet a letdown, as our expectations were tempered from the start. But the retailer not only managed to validate most of our original concerns but add a few new ones. You probably know the rap sheet by now: No native PDF support. Costs as much as a low-end laptop. "Klugey" keyboard. Clumsy, extortionate e-mail conversion process for adding your own files. And the web browser? Crippled. But what really kills us? You have to pay to read a blog on this thing.

It is also #7 of the Top Ten Best Gadgets.

Given the choice of Sony style or the ugly, poke-your-eye-out lines of Amazon's new e-reader, the one with free internet wins. Though its primary functionality is designed to funnel you into spending money at the Kindle store and is hampered by nickel-and-dime fees, skip to the web browser, and the unit shines. The e-ink display is, as ever, fabulous.

Schizophrenic, much?

The New Sony-Borders e-Book Store Goes Live

11:07 AM by jasonkchapman in E-Book General | News

According to an article on The Book Standard Web site, the co-branded Borders-Sony e-book site has gone live. Access to the site is given to customers who buy a Sony Reader at a Borders store.

Here's the interesting part. With all the noise about wireless and e-books lately, Borders is providing access to the site to T-Mobile Hot-Spot customers and providing T-Mobile wireless connectivity in the store. While the connectivity really only seems useful to lubricate impulse buys, it does forecast the plans Borders has for their new Digital Media brick and mortar stores, where digital media can be browsed in a regular store, but purchased in digital form.

Publishers Weekly provides some additional information. Customers who buy the Sony Reader through Borders are given a promotion code and access to a customized version of the eBook Library software necessary to access the Borders-Sony e-book store.
