In Copyright? - Copyright Renewal Database launched

09:50 AM by Alexander Turcic in E-Book General | News

A few days ago, Google engineer Jarkko Hietaniemi released the XML file of all copyright renewal notices for books published in the United States between 1923 and 1963. The file is free and in the public domain, so I went ahead and imported it into a database-driven Web application, allowing you to do quick full-text searches through the records.

You can access it here: http://www.incopyright.org/

I should note that there is another similar online database by Stanford University; however, according to the Google Book Search blog, the Google-based database contains "the best and most comprehensive set of renewal records available today".

Feedback always recommended.

Enjoy!

Chasing the Light - Steve Jordan's newest e-book is out!

11:51 PM by Bob Russell in E-Book General | Reading Recommendations

Author and MobileRead member Steve Jordan has just release another e-book for your enjoyment. Chasing the Light is DRM-free and available for only $2.50 in the following formats...

  • ePub (!)
  • eReader/ Palm Doc
  • MobiPocket
  • MS Reader
  • RTF
  • Sony Reader

Tom Everson, forced to flee his home during the 2011 oil riots, returns eight years later to find the girl he had to leave behind, start a business and make a life for them both. But he had to sneak into the country illegally, the energy situation has only gotten worse, and the country may break out in more riots at any time! Did Tom arrive at exactly the wrong moment?

Note: Chasing the Light includes adult subjects and language. Some passages are considered inappropriate for minors.

Steve's writing is always high quality and thoughtful. If you're looking for a new book and a DRM-free author to support, give it a try!

Update on the new miBook

07:58 AM by Nate the great in E-Book General | News

You may have seen the news yesterday about the new ebook reader from Photoco called the miBook. One of our members pointed out that the miBook has a startling similarity to an existing digital photo viewer. I've done some research, and I think she is correct.

The miBook isn't new; it's actually a repurposed digital photo viewer. Photoco has two 7" devices with almost identical specs. The only difference is that the one has speakers. This model, the 7Xl, is the one that I think is also the miBook. Here is where I've found some technical specs. (Screen resolution 480 x 234; I was expecting this resolution on a device that cost only $100.)

The photo viewer itself is available on Amazon.

Here is the back of the 7XL model from Photoco:

It was bound to happen eventually. I know I've looked at a digital picture frame and thought about how it might be turned into an ebook reader. It looks like Photoco is the first to actually follow through on the idea.

Amazon Taunts France

07:06 PM by zelda_pinwheel in E-Book General | News

I just got an email from Amazon.
subject : Get Amazon Kindle at a New Reduced Price
"As someone who has shown an interest in
Kindle, you might be excited to know we
recently reduced the price to $359."

Now, I have to wonder. Amazon knows my shipping and billing addresses (which are the same, and are both in France). The email address i receive their mails on ends in .fr. When i've ordered from them, i've used a french credit card from a french bank to pay. given how much information they track about their customers, you'd think they would realise that a kindle is not really an option for me. So what is this ? Willful provocation ?? trying to make me jealous ?? or... are they planning to launch the Kindle in France, and they're trying to generate some reeeeally early buzz ?
