V3 update Hanlin V1.27 description:

1. Improve HTML format.
2. Improve PDF format, support encrypted PDF file.
3. Improve PNG display effect.
4. Update the new parser of FB2.
5. Optimize the menus of Ukraine, Russian, Turkish and Bulgarian languages.
6. Use the Founder Font Library to replace the current Chinese font library.
7. Add the menu of Hungarian language.
8. Support lit and ppt files.

How to read encrypted PDF file

For example, a PDF file named a.pdf, open a notepad file, and enter into the password and save the file as a.pwd file. Copy the a.pwd file into the same folder of a.pdf file, then the encrypted a.pdf file can be read.

Colour E ink closer then we think? - Fujitsu to launch FLEPia in fall

08:42 PM by bbusybookworm in E-Book General | News

Saw the post on Engadget that Fujitsu may launching its FLEPia line of colour e-readers soon. Its still rumours but still look interesting.

Link.

The only disappointing thing is the rumored price (~$940). Still, its not as bad as it could be.

ALA releases flashy is-this-work-in-copyright slider

04:30 AM by Alexander Turcic in E-Book General | News

Whether a book is in the US public domain is a complex legal determination. For those in doubt, the American Library Association released a flash tool allowing you to dial up the various copyright terms for works created at different time periods and under different conditions.

Obviously, different countries impose different laws, so take this tool with a grain of salt if you're living outside the US.

Salon on the iPhone as an e-reader: Much love little hate

04:16 AM by Alexander Turcic in E-Book Readers | Apple Devices

Well, as soon as we heard that 3rd party apps like eReader were to be ported to the iPhone, we knew it's going to be a big hit. Take the latest example, where Mr. Hutsko of the Salon waxes lyrical about the benefits of turning his beloved iPhone into an e-book reading device.

Seeing the eReader program icon on the iPhone's screen literally brought tears to my eyes. Seriously. Having spent the last decade reading scores of e-books from backlit cover to cover on Palm, Windows Mobile, Nokia and BlackBerry devices, I thought the arrival of eReader to the iPhone was a dream come true ...

... and at the same time, a nightmare, turning the iPhone into the worst e-book reader in the world, which I'll get to in a minute.

Hutsko loves that he can read at night without a reading light, and that he doesn't need to carry an extra clunky device. So where does the "nightmare" part fit into this? Nowhere, apparantly, unless you consider having hundreds of other iPhone applications to toy with a major disadvantage.

You disagree? Join the Apple missed the boat discussion.

OpenInkpot v0.0 developer preview released

02:39 AM by mrdini in Archive | OpenInkpot

We are pleased to announce the first usable developer preview of OpenInkpot - ready for you developers to play around with! From our blog:

Warning! Do not try to install this firmware to V3ext (512mb) version! This may damage internal flash. We will soon release another firmware correcting the errors if you already tried to do it.

Since this is a developer preview, please don't expect too much from the 0.0 version just yet. But we are pleased to say that it can boot on V3 hardware, and currently includes a bookshelf (Madshelf), bookreader (FBReader), and SSH server (dropbear - USB network connection even works occasionally!). However, we would advise that only developers try this release out, as it is not quite ready for end-users to try just yet.

Downloads are at: http://www.openinkpot.org/pub/releas...v3-0.0.tar.bz2

Please do feel free to leave comments. You can also visit us in our IRC channel - #openinkpot on OFTC.

Thanks!

Whispernet Down Today! Up! Down! Up!

11:17 AM by CCDMan in E-Book General | News

As noted on CNet, Amazon has yet another bout of technical issues today. Their S3 servers are down in both North America and Europe. I noticed this when I tried to download a Kindle book wirelessly, which did not show up. Whe I tried via the web and PC, I got an "item currently unavailable" message.

No word yet on what happened.....

Esquire printed magazine. Now with an E Ink cover

11:16 AM by athlonkmf in E-Book General | News

First Esquire had to make a six-figure investment to hire an engineer in China to develop a battery small enough to be inserted in the magazine cover. The batteries and the display case are manufactured and put together in China. They are shipped to Texas and on to Mexico, where the device is inserted by hand into each magazine. The issues will then be shipped via trucks, which will be refrigerated to preserve the batteries, to the magazine’s distributor in Glazer, Ky.

NYTimes

E Ink is going to shine as the cover for 100.000 esquire magazines. That'd be a flashing, changing cover on a "classic" printed thing.

(so tempted to buy one, just to hack the cover)
