The Witch Below the Dreaming Wood by H. G. Parry is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
'This book feels as though I could have pulled it, dust-coated, from a half-forgotten shelf. A true feast of myth and wonder . . . I grinned, I cried, I didn't want to put it down and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished'
Freya Marske, bestselling author of A Marvellous Light

Dive into an atmospheric and captivating historical fantasy about the power of stories, where dreams come to life and Arthurian legends are reborn.

Wales, 1941. As the second world war ravages the globe and bombs fall from the sky, people all over the world begin to dream of King Arthur. The dreams spread like a fantastical plague, flooding people's sleep night after night. Whispers arise of wonders and unexplained sights - dragons in the London Underground, and strange lights over Stonehenge. Self-proclaimed prophets claim they are miracles, heralding Arthur's return at the time of Britain's greatest need.⁣
⁣
Elaine Ambrose has never dreamed of Arthur, and she doesn't believe in miracles. A librarian at the British Museum, she wants only to protect the museum's collection from the Blitz, and is frustrated to be sent instead to catalogue a reclusive professor's private library on the coast of North Wales. But all is not as it seems. Soon Ellie must confront what she's tried to ignore: she dreams not of Arthur, but of Nimue - the Lady of the Lake. And her dreams promise not salvation, but a return to the darkness of the last days of Camelot.

Not a deep discount, but %60 off the current price for a new release.
Palaces of the Crow by Ray Nayler is $6 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
In Ray Nayler’s speculative novel of the recent past, four young teens caught between Nazis and the Red Army survive winter in the woods with the help of a flock of highly intelligent crows with a magnificent secret of their own to protect.

Neriya is a young Jewish girl who dreams of becoming a biologist and has befriended a flock of crows in her shtetl. Czesław is an underage Polish soldier who escapes into the freezing Lithuanian woods after deserting the Red Army. Kezia is a Roma horse trader whose family is on the run from Soviet collectivization. As the German blitzkrieg crashes across the Lithuanian border in June 1941, all three are caught up in the onslaught. Along with Innokentiy, an abandoned boy who cannot speak, they are driven into the primeval forest, where they survive by forming an unbreakable bond with one another—and with Neriya’s intelligent crows, who for years have been bringing her intricate gifts that suggest they are no ordinary corvids.

As the war goes on, the crows warn the children of danger and help them hide from the human threats of the forest—not only the Germans but also Russian deserters, Polish partisans, fascist Lithuanian police, and the other bandits and outcasts wandering the benighted landscape.

From Ray Nayler—winner of the Hugo and Locus Awards and a finalist for the Ray Bradbury Prize and the Arthur C. Clarke Award—Palaces of the Crow blends history and haunting speculative wonder in a story of survival, loyalty, and the fragile beauty of life in the darkest of times.

A Trade of Blood (Ana and Din Mysteries #3) by Robert Jackson Bennett is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
An unthinkable crime. A fatal conspiracy. A suspect without a trace.

The heir to one of the Empire's most powerful families sits in jail, accused of murder. His hands are covered in his victim's blood, and he can neither deny his guilt nor explain his actions.

If the great detective Ana Dolabra - along with her assistant Dinios Kol - cannot save him, the farming canton of Sapirdad will explode into war, plunging the Empire into famine and chaos.

But this murder is only the latest in a subtle web of death, woven by a mastermind with an ancient weapon at his disposal.

Ana and Din have faced terrible crimes before. But as they pursue their adversary through wild ranges, sprawling ranches, and reeking slaughterhouses, even they are not prepared for the horrifying secret behind their opponent's powers . . .

Eccentric yet brilliant detective Ana Dolabra must prove a man's innocence to stop a civil war in the third book of the series that began with the award-winning The Tainted Cup.
The Dungeon Book by Gareth Hanrahan is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
A young girl is left to die in a wizard's dungeon but finds a new home with the monsters around her in this humorous and heartfelt standalone epic fantasy from acclaimed author Gareth Hanrahan.

"The Dungeon Book manages the difficult task of being epic and heartfelt both at once, and does it with style. I fell in love with Bait and her menagerie of friends immediately." —Django Wexler, author of ***How to Become the Dark Lord**and Die Trying***

Enter a world of dungeons and dragons, magic and manticores, and goblins and gargoyles ...

Bait doesn't remember a time before the dungeon. Before the dragon stole her from her cot. She doesn't know what her name was before she was handed over to the monstrous denizens of the dungeon beneath the sorcerer's tower. Luckily for Bait, they decided not to eat her. And so she grew up in the dark—the goblins her adopted family, a vengeful minotaur her protector, a sentient skull her tutor, and a blob of corridor slime her main source of nutrition.

But the labyrinthine dungeon, with its haunted halls, buried temples and forgotten magics, draws treasure hunters like moths to flame. And as the outside world starts to intrude, Bait will learn what it means to be monstrous and she will have to decide where she truly belongs.

"Full of wit and adventure, twists and turns, wonderful monsters, and astonishing revelations. An absolute joy." —M. R. Carey, author of Infinity Gate

"For a story set in the deepest, darkest dungeon, The Dungeon Book absolutely bursts with warmth, heart, and energy. One of the best things you're going to read this year." —Jackson Ford, author of The Bone Raiders
The Red Knight (The Traitor Son Cycle #1) by Miles Cameron is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
Miles Cameron weaves an epic tale of magic and mercenaries, war and depravity, politics and intrigue in this action-packed debut fantasy The Red Knight.

Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men -- or worse, a company of mercenaries -- against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job. The abby is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.

Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war. . .

If you're a fan of Mark Lawrence, John Gwynne, or Brian McClellan you won't want to miss out on this intricate, epic debut fantasy.
Rialto by Kate Milford is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Middle-grade fantasy.
Quote:
A standalone mystery from a New York Times bestselling, Edgar Award-winning author set in a contemporary world tinged with magic, in which two sisters spend summer vacation in a small town in the shadows of abandoned amusement park that is not what it seems.

Ivy and Dahlia Vicar know this summer’s trip to visit friends in Rialto, Missouri, is going to be different from their usual family vacations.

Twelve-year-old Dahlia, an artist who lives with anxiety, is looking forward to something new. Rialto, after all, has its own abandoned theme park! But mystery-loving, fourteen-year-old Ivy is struggling with how to be the right kind of big sister to Dahlia, and longs for the way things—especially vacations—were when they were younger.

In Rialto, it quickly becomes clear that this vacation will also be different in totally unexpected ways. For one thing, the town stands in the middle of an improbable forest that, according to local legend, swallowed it overnight decades before. Then there are Dahlia’s even more improbable sightings of impossible creatures—a giraffe with antlers and a leopard with wings. And there’s their new friend Remy, whose family inherited the house they’re all staying in from an aunt who left bequests for local friends that Remy must personally distribute.

When he enlists Ivy and Dahlia to help deliver these gifts, they find themselves drawn into a mystery going back to the time when Rialto Park was still open. And it begins to seem that, if they are going to help Remy solve it, they will have to find a way to believe in magic.

Themes of friendship, family, mental health, and resilience are expertly woven through this magical, richly imagined story of two sisters and an enigmatic town that transforms everyone who visits it.

Blacktail by Scott Hawkins is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Was on my wishlist.
Quote:
A dark, brutal work of fantasy and animal revenge from Scott Hawkins, the critically acclaimed author of The Library at Mount Char.

Blacktail is a half-breed wolf, born to hunt. When he finds love beyond a garden wall, he dares to imagine a peaceful life – until men butcher his mate and unborn pups in a surgical act of cruelty.

His grief ignites a rampage of torn throats and shattered bone. Soon, Blacktail’s violence draws the gaze of an ancient feline witch. She sends him south to wake the sleeping Forest God and end the age of reason.

As Blacktail journeys farther from his wild home and deeper into the world of man, he encounters strangers – animal, mortal, and otherworldly – who want to rid the world of humans.
Murmuration by TJ Klune is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)

From the bestselling, award-winning author of The House in the Cerulean Sea. TJ Klune's** **Murmuration is a 1950s-set small town romance that twists into a dark psychological thriller. Perfect for fans of Black Mirror.

Every small town has its secrets . . .**

In the idyllic town of Amorea, Mike works his dream job at the local bookstore. The staff at the local know his order – especially Sean, the waiter who has a special smile just for Mike. Now, after years of anticipation, Mike and Sean are ready to take the next step in their burgeoning romance.

But the edges of this perfect town are beginning to fray. There are no children or parents in Amorea. No one who has left town for the far mountains has ever come back. One night, Mike wakes up to a storm cloud of uncanny starlings blackening the sky.

And no one but Mike seems to notice.

As Mike loses hold on his identity, violent memories of another life interfere with everything good about Amorea. But Mike will do whatever he can to keep Sean from the darkness that’s coming for him. Nothing here is perfect, but there is someone worth saving.

The Books of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin are a Daily Deal on the UK Kindle store for 99p.

Not for the first time, I don't think.

This is all six books, plus additional stories not collected in the main books and a lecture. I don't know if there's anything new to me except the lecture, but I thought I might as well get it for 99p.

The Chronicles of Tornor Trilogy (Watchtower, The Dancers of Arun, and The Northern Girl) by Elizabeth A. Lynn is $4 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
80s fantasy. The first book will be discussed in the "Cherryh Unit" of A Meal of Thorns in February.
Quote:
Tornor is a land of warriors and lovers, a diverse place where devotion knows few bounds and honor stands strong in the face of adversity. Spread across generations, these three novels feature a trio of courageous heroes as they come of age in a magical world.

In the World Fantasy Award–winning Watchtower, Tornor Keep is the legendary tower that protects the winter end of a summer land. But when Tornor is overrun by raiders, Prince Errel and the tenacious warrior Ryke must fight the usurpers to save their home.

In The Dancers of Arun, a student must learn to control his gifts. As the scholar and scribe of Tornor, Kerris has been in training for the past seventeen years. But it's not until his brother Kel—of the Cheari culture—teaches him the psychic art of patterning that the city of Elath comes under attack and Kerris must draw on his new talents to fight the dangers of psychic warfare.

In the epic conclusion to this fantasy saga, The Northern Girl, a young servant must find her inner strength as she hides a magical talent. The visions begin when Sorren is only thirteen years old and she's marked as a member of the White Clan of Arun. But this honor of being a witch frightens Sorren and she does not want to come within the Tanjo and serve. Instead, she's determined to keep this gift a secret for as long as she can—whatever the cost may be.

Elizabeth A. Lynn's groundbreaking series was one of the first to feature same-sex relationships as an accepted part of a fantasy world. Filled with provocative ideas, haunting prose, and boundless imagination, the trilogy will captivate fantasy lovers both new and old.

I remember painstakingly trying to track down each volume in the US when they would go on sale. Some of them did--some of them would stubbornly refuse to ever drop below like $5.99 or so.

Meanwhile the Brits get the whole damn series for 99p.

Only for a day.

I paid a lot more to read them all myself, some years back. The only one I have as an ebook is Tales from Earthsea which was still three times the price of this.

And I don't really need it, so it's 99p on top of all the money I spent reading them the first time.

Icehenge by Kim Stanley Robinson is $2 at Amazon and Kobo US. I love these 'mysterious alien artifact' stories.

Quote:
An early novel from Science Fiction legend Kim Stanley Robinson, now available for the first time in decades: Icehenge.

On the North Pole of Pluto there stands an enigma: a huge circle of standing blocks of ice, built on the pattern of Earth's Stonehenge--but ten times the size, standing alone at the farthest reaches of the Solar System. What is it? Who came there to build it?

The secret lies, perhaps, in the chaotic decades of the Martian Revolution, in the lost memories of those who have lived for centuries.
