Sideloading Dictionaries
Hi all, I am attempting to install (sideload) the monolingual Italian dictionary sourced from this thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=196931 to my glo HD which I have upgraded to firmware 4.38.21908 (also sideloaded).
It seems that according to the 5th post of this thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3354058 this dictionary was present in firmware 3.17.3, I am willing to downgrade or do whatever necessary to get this working in the simplest manner possible (without connecting to WiFi). I have attempted to follow the instructions in this thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=273820 however my libnickel.so.1.0.0.yalm file does not contain any "Allow searches on Extra dictionaries" option. I have likewise consulted the information contained within this link https://pgaskin.net/dictutil/dicthtml/install.html however yet again there is no "Enable searches on extra dictionaries patch" to enable and install, the link (https://github.com/pgaskin/kobopatch...leases/tag/v84) does not contain any patch of this nature, neither do any of the configurable files in the patch contain any option to "enable searches of extra dictionaries". I have also tried looking at dictutil https://pgaskin.net/dictutil/dictutil/install.html to no avail, where am I supposed to type this code into? To say I'm confused and have no idea what is going on would be a gross understatement, so any help or clarification on these matters would be greatly appreciated, thanks |

It would appear that the dictionary I'm trying to use is a V1 dictionary, which according to this link https://pgaskin.net/dictutil/dicthtml/v1v2.html will not work with any firmware newer than 4.7.10364 (December 2017). In that case I'm more than happy to "downgrade" if that's what's required. If anyone knows how to get this working please let me know

I can't answer your question, but to clarify, are you specifically *wanting* to install the old dictionary and not the new one? There is an Italian Dictionary for Kobo, and I would assume it to be as complete as the previous one.
V2 is here: http://download.kobobooks.com/ereade...icthtml-it.zip There might be an even newer one.. I've misplaced my list of Kobo Dictionary download links. Here is the V3 links, a much larger file, http://download.kobobooks.com/ereade...icthtml-it.zip Last edited by rashkae; 10-10-2023 at 02:31 PM. |

I've already got the latest firmware side loaded by no issues. If anyone has any tips how to actually do this I'll be very grateful. Desperate to get this working |

SOLVED
Fixed the problem, all you have to do is copy the dictionary zip into the dictionary folder and eject the device.
Why there are countless other threads, tools, and tutorials instructing people to do otherwise is beyond me, as I wasted 4 days trying to figure this out patching this editing that customising SQL tables changing firmwares when all I had to do was copy and paste the file. Hopefully this thread will be useful to someone in the future to save them the agony of what I've just put myself through. I also pasted in custom wikitionary dictionaries which work perfectly along with the normal v3 dictionary. Can someone please post me the link for the Spanish v3 monolingual dictionary, the link in the main thread is broken. Cheers |

@rashkae already provided you with a working link for the v3 Italian dictionary. It shouldn't take long to figure out what the equivalent Spanish link is. |

Right, not hard to figure out.. It's even easier (for me) than writing sardonic comments.

As I started reading this thread today, I was wondering why you were making it so hard on yourself. Kobo implemented the change for dictionaries a few years back. Then you explained your approach. One of the problems with this website is that it’s as old as forever. It’s easy to find ancient threads without realizing that they’re ancient. It’s a mistake you only make once, but I’m sure we’ve all gone down the wrong rabbit hole before. I’m glad you figured things out and got it working. |
