Problem with a 64MB Cybook on Build708 install.

Okay,

If anyone has experienced this and knows the solution, please tell me.

A friend just did the Build708 install on her 64MB Cybook. After completing the install and restarting it, her Cybook got through the first splash screen and then stalled at the triple-dot second splash screen. Then it rebooted. And cycled through the whole thing again. She has to hit the reset button to break out of it. Of course, that turns the Cybook off and when she turns it on - back to the cycle.

Now it can't be seen by the PC on *any* USB port, so there's no way to format the Cybook. And it's now ignoring any and all attempts to re-install the 708 *and* the 538 firmware.

Anyone have an idea of what to do? I'm at a loss.

The fact it's rebooting at the "three dots" screen suggests that it's a memory corruption issue. Unfortunately if it won't reflash to 538 (which reformats the internal disk) there's not a lot you can do about it . I assume you've tried rebooting without the SD card?

Maybe. Maybe not. Thing is, I'm trying to fix the problem long-distance. She's up in Washington and I'm down in California.

Will give it a try. If I can *just* get it to be recognized on the PC I can have her reformat the Cybook, yes?

Definitely worth trying taking out the SD card. If the card file system is corrupt that may well fix it.

So, I've got a new 708 Build...

From Bookeen. This one does a format and re-flash. http://bookeen.free.fr/bin/CybookGen...nelb708fmt.zip

I've tried it on the 64MB Cybook (or rather, my friend has) and it completed. But when it got to the Library screen, it would NO LONGER RESPOND TO ANY BUTTON!!!

That's right, now it just sits at the Library screen after completing the boot process, doing nothing, until the user presses the reset switch. When turned back on, it goes right back to that state.

Did Bookeen say this was only for the 64MB Cybook or should it work on both the 64MB and 512MB versions?

Well, Bookeen didn't say one way or the other. However, given that it crapped out a 64MB Cybook, I'd be extra-cautious about putting it on either unit.

WTF!?!

My 512MB Cybook is running Build 708. Anyway, after adding in *FOUR* new ebooks to the SD card, and doing a Safely Remove Hardware, upon detaching from the USB cable, *MY* Cybook is now doing a boot/reboot cycle!!!

I've got the 708FMT zip file so I'll see if that does anything good.

Hi, did you solve the boot-reboot problem using the 708fmt file intended for the 64Mb?
Cheers

Nope. The update kernel for Build 708 (fmt) solved the boot/reboot problem on the 512MB unit, but the 64MB unit is still DOA. We've tried everything. It's going back to Bookeen.

Have Bookeen confirmed that it should work on a 64MB Cybook?

Just to make sure we are talking about the same update, was it 708fmt you installed and had no problem with or the standard 708?

Humm... are there several of them? I used the first one available, so I believe it's the standard/original one. It didn't format anything and it was not a big download.

So... the discussion now is whether the 708fmt works for 64MB models? There I cannot help (well, I could try it in my Cybook, but I don't think I'm going to...)

Yes, that is the question at hand. Bookeen should be able to answer it, though -- I'm not going to try it on my Cybook, either.
