But, we don't know how many they actually had in their initial order. For all we know it may have only been 50 units. In addition, early adopters aren't very price sensitive so I'm not sure we can draw a real conclusion on supply and demand. One big question would be what would the backlog look like if it was $350 or $300? I think it's just too early to tell how well it is actually doing. Personally I think it's a great device and would love to see a runaway hit for iRex in order for them to continue to develop the product and innovate as a company.

That depends on how many they had in stock to begin with. If they only had 30 to 60 units, then all the sellout means is that they sold it to the various people who'll buy any new gadget and who have money enough that they really don't care what it costs (in other words, these are the people who would buy an iPad if Apple priced it at $1500). Without knowing how many they had in stock, you can't draw any inferences on supply and demand.

Good grief, what an iRex fanboy. I'm glad you got your 800, and I never thought the thing wouldn't sell even a single unit. But so long as this unit remains overpriced for being capable of nothing beyond the most basic of reader functionality, remains unavailable to all but the people who know where to find it and go specifically looking for it on the BB website, or remains unavailable period, it is going to get buried and remain a super-niche product here in the U.S. I'm upset because when iRex first announced this device many months ago, it looked like exactly what I was hoping for in a reader. It's upsetting that this company screwed the product up so badly that it isn't even close to being worth what they're charging for it. Too bad: it could have been killer for the ereader market.

DR800 back in stock at BestBuy

Was fortunate enough to get in on the deal at Car Toys on Saturday. Just received the "Shipped" email from them. Called BestBuy to cancel my order that was supposed to ship on March 18th and was told that it will ship today and they can't cancel my order. Did not get the updated status email
they said I would get.

My $.02.
A friend of mine recently was in US, so i've ordered DR800SG from bestbuy on February 20th. Because he was leaving US on February 26th, i've paid for Express Delivery (bestbuy have promised february 24-25th arrival date for my order). Bestbuy immediately withdrawed the funds from my credit card.
However, on february 23th my order went into "backordered" state.
In email i've received from bestbuy they were offering some options, including cancelling my order. I've asked them to cancel my order, but got no answer. On february 25th, i've asked them again, and again there was no answer.
On february 27th i've received a strange email from bestbuy indicating that there is some billing problem, so they could not process my order. I've asked them of what billing problem they are talking about, asked to cancel my order (at the moment, there already was an offer from Car Toys), and finally got an answer that they're escalating my request to their Order Department and will cancel my order asap.
So, today i've put some money on my credit card to pull the trigger with Car Toys deal (i have another friend who lives in the US, and i've asked him to receive the package and resend it to me)... however, immediately after i've funded my account, bestbuy withdrawed the funds once more, and now i've received the email stating that my order just was shipped.
So, ultimately i've got charged $900 (2*(device+tax+express delivery)) for the order shipped 5 days after the promised delivery date, to the address where no one lives now. All this after i have numerously times asked to cancel the order, and after bestbuy rep. said me that they're cancelling it. I'm now going to fill a chargeback claim in my credit organization, which is going to give me some headache; hope that Car Toys or another reseller will have these in stock after i will get back my money from bestbuy.

Well, consider this my bad luck, but i just can't believe there are such horrible online stores. It looks like they're not thinking of their customers at all i believe US customers already know what bestbuy is, but maybe there are some who do not.

PS: Please, forgive me my bad english. I'm so upset now, that it is even worse than usual

I've heard similar stories from people who ordered the Sony PRS-900 from BestBuy.com when it was first released and had to wait several weeks for shipment. They too were unable to cancel and ship dates were constantly pushed back.

I sounds to me like BestBuy is just assuming that they are dealing with a US customer with a permanent address. They probably aren't expecting to have to handle a small delivery window like that, because the person would only be there for a couple days.

Hopefully you'll get it worked out. If I remember right though, mine came without a delivery signature required, which means that if nobody is at the address you gave them UPS will probably leave it on the front step. The only thing I can think of is to contact UPS and request that they return the package to the sender (if they'll do that).

Well, this is not a problem. The problem is that, after my numerous requests and after they've promised they will cancel the order, they finally did not. BTW, as i have said before, there was an offer to cancel the order in that "backordered" email i've received.
And why did they charged my card twice?

PS: Also, one can suspect that i have paid for Express Delivery not to get it within 10 days from purchase or so.

PPS: The person was there for two months, there just were no dr800sg on sale

Yes, i will try this route. Also maybe it is possible to made an arrangement with housekeeper or so.
Really, i should not have been ordered the device on that address. But the hope to get it on March 1st was so high and tempting...

Sounds like by the time they finally did try to cancel it, it had already shipped.

No doubt there were some funny things going on in their system though. I think most of us that ordered it the first day saw it go into a "backordered" state for a day or two before it actually shipped. When some of us called them, they said it never was backordered and weren't sure why we got an order status saying that.
