DR800SG

does anybody outside the USA has already the Irex DR800SG. reason of this question; i consider to buy 2 for myself and 2 for friends. we all are living in Switzerland. I was told that if you buy an Irex DR800SG in the USA, you have to get online before leaving the country. it seems is has to do with autorisation of some kind. this is new for me, so I like to ask someone on this forum.

I can't imagine that this is true, simple because you can order them by internet from where ever you live. can someone tell me his experience?

This probably only applies to the B&N account. ePub books can be transferred with ADE over the USB cable. But B&N ebooks can only purchased and downloaded from inside the US. The 3G will not work in Switzerland.

great, tnx pauli. that's a great help. we are not intent to buy any book from B&N, cause we're reading German anyway.

Hi Franky,

I'm also living in Switzerland and I received my DR800SG 2 weeks ago. A friend, who is staying in the states bought it for me at best buy and forwarded it to me. The device + tax + domestic shipping + credit card fee + shipping to Switzerland was CHF 545. But I might have to pay additional toll taxes (~50 CHF) which I'm not sure of yet...

The device alone is 399$ but with VAT and shipping about 440$. The problem is that apparently you have to declare goods with a price >400$ in detail. It was quite a hassle for my friend at the post office...

Edit: Yes, the 3G doesn't work, but I didn't have to activate it or anything.

Why then buy the 800SG? 800S you can have directly from the Netherlands for 499 Euro. And you'll have warranty...After toll and taxes, you'll only safe about 15%...Is this worth it? Having no warranty?

I believe the issue is that iRex says warranty repairs for the DR800SG are only handled in the US. Did you ship it back to iRex for repair? It would be interesting to know if they are supporting that.

"Having no warranty" - this is a concern for me. I was considering buying an 800SG, and I am in Canada. Do you know for sure that IREX does not support the 800SG if you live outside of the US?

I believe the warranty only says that repairs are handled in the US, it doesn't say that if you are outside the US the warranty is void. At least, not that I know of.

What this usually means is that you will have to pay for shipping to an authorized repair center in the US yourself, and then they will cover the costs for doing the work. In other words, the warranty does not include international shipping. That is generally how things like this work for other companies, but I don't know the details of how it would work for the DR800SG. I'm interested in more details about vakya's experience with this.
