It's the Sony software isn't it? They still haven't released the Mac version AFAIK - but it's good you point it out, there's more people on Windows than MacOS, and many of them might use the Sony software.

I also set a certain base size in Calibre before converting, but that only translates into the smallest size and the one that the book opens in. Then I use the button if I want one of the two larger sizes. |

I used to do LRF conversion exclusively, but with the advent of better tools and support for epub I've switched to that; like jswolf said in the beginning, ultimately lrf is a dead-end format tied to a single device.

Sony is dropping lrf and going epub. Epub wins.

Some people really like PDF - a good quality one sized for the 505's screen is very very nice. Unfortunately it's also very very rare so most people don't associate the term 'PDF' with anything other than an A4/Letter sized thing that doesn't display well on any portable device.

I do like PDF primarily for its relatively static presentation that I get to define. That does include typographic niceties and relatively universal viewing capability on computers in addition to my reading device.

Currently, it's a little inconvenient for me to set up good books in epub. I don't hate the format really, but it's easier and more convenient to make pdf for myself. I have no desire to resize text once I've set it, and I retain source files in the relatively unlikely event I get a different viewer in the near future. Plus, it's a financial instability thing. Gotta find a way to justify payment for a device I don't really like by getting more involved in the process a bit. I'm trying to convince myself I'm able to read books, and not just long webpages. In general I find these devices to be pretty awful, and I would much, much prefer a paper book collection in consistent, organized covers. Alas, book availability in English is somewhat limited here, importing books demands a hefty price all its own, and storage space is a rather serious problem in my modest dwelling. And I'm the type of guy who would really love to reprint all my favorite books into a static format of my own choosing, on paper of my choosing, in a cover of my choosing. Unfortunately that's not really feasible either, and the closest I can get to that under current circumstances is to do it with the pdf files I make. It's only a vague shadow of what I'd like to do, but it's something. |
