I have been exploring how to manage my collection of sheet music (both print and digital) and some of these ideas are helpful.
I do not really want them mixed in with rest of my calibre library so it is currently a separate library (and on a different computer, connected to overhead scanner I use to digitize sheet music). My digital sheet music can be multiple parts (different instruments of a single work) so I have been adding PDFs for each part as Data files. Some have LilyPond (.ly) files that can be edited with open source Frescobaldi to layout music for publishing to PDF or export to MusicXML and .midi files that can be opened and played or imported into DAW. So there are several types of Data files that calibre doesn't need to do anything with but store. I've added custom columns for genre and arrangement and physical location. It's a lot of work so I'm starting slow so I can sort of get my requirements straight before proceeding. |

Is there a particular reason why you want to create the file outside Calibre before adding it? It seems to me that a more straightforward method would be to create the empty book in Calibre and add your metadata there - a folder with the opf & cover will be created automatically within the Calibre database, and you can manage everything within Calibre just as you would with an ebook.
