The DX & DXG family are Gen2. Hence no backport of azw3. Essentially K2 with a bigger screen.
Though the International B009 DXG came out after the K3, it was mainly a screen upgrade of the DX. Stupid spec with not enough RAM. So the DX & DXG while hyped for PDFs are bad at it due to lack of RAM and only 150 dpi vs the the 167 dpi of 6″ models for ages. The K3 was the oldest with enough RAM to backport azw3. The original FW has no azw3. The K4 also probably had no azw3 till a later FW upgrade. Last edited by Quoth; Yesterday at 09:36 AM. |

I bought one in the last "Fire Sale" Amazon had for them and I feel I wasted my money. Worst gadget I ever bought. I feel sorry for those that paid full price for an of the DX/DXG family. |

I appreciate all the responses. I feel I did not type my question precisely enough.
What I meant to say was: since we can no longer download the kindle books to our computer and transfer them to the kindle via USB, can I buy an ebook at booksamillion (or another e-book store) and then put it onto my kindle? From the responses, it seems that I would need to take extra steps. As I would like a copy for my computer since I may get a different e-reader in the future, should I instead buy it from amazon directly to the kindle and then get a copy through calibre? Thanks |

If you want to download directly to your Kindle without any extra steps, then Amazon is basically your only option. You can also buy a DRM-free book in .mobi format from places like Baen, Smashwords or Angry Robot, download it to your computer and transfer to your Kindle via USB. Not books from major publishers, though, as those usually have DRM. If you don't want extra steps (like DRM removal and conversion), you'll have to buy those from Amazon. |

The change Amazon did only effects books downloaded from Amazon themselves. It did nothing to change anything about getting books from other sources and copying those over USB. The way you deal with those is exactly the same as it was before. If the seller provides them in a DRM-free Kindle compatible format (AZW3/MOBI/PDF) then there's no conversion needed and you can copy them directly over USB. Otherwise, you'll have to deal with conversion and possibly DRM.
