Kobo Book Annoyance

So, with all the drama with Amazon and the D&T removal. I am exploring again the idea of buy my books from Kobo.

As it turns out I bought one from the store but did not realize I already owned it on my Kindle which I bought on Amazon. No big deal. But I noticed a difference between the two.

In this particular book, there are places within chapters in which the action/location changes but a new chapter does not start. Instead, a graphical image appears to signify the change. On the version of the book I bought from Amazon, it is a nice-looking graphic. On the version that came from the Kobo store it is simply "...". Does it impact my ability to enjoy the book? No. Is it annoying that I saw this? Yes. Does it cause concern about books bought on Kobo and what other things could either be missing or substandard? Yes.

Did anyone else notice this?

There are two ePub versions of this eBook. One if from Astra Publishing and the other is from BAEN. The one from Kobo is from Astra.

The one from BAEN is the one you bought from Amazon.

Actually, often it's the other way round, because most books are uploaded to Amazon as epubs and converted to azw3/KF8. Or worse is KFX. Amazon messes with images, formatting and fonts.

Somehow you've just been unlucky with the Kobo store version. I know people that upload the exact same epub for Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo and Google's Playbooks. There is no reason not to, unless someone is trying to be too clever.

Yes! You are correct, I checked each device and the book is from two different publishers like you said. I recall this author switched publishers while working on the series. Thank you.

What's really funny to me is that both versions are, as of today, available on the Kobo store at the same time. (though the Baen version is more expensive). I don't think I've ever seen that before.

I found this out when I found the book at one of my libraries. The library has both versions. I was able to see enough in the previews to see the difference.

I've seen two or more versions of quite a few books on the Kobo store.
