Thumbs down Annoyance - missing book page numbers.

I'm reading a book, and the page numbers show up on the Kindle App for my iPhone, but not on my brand-spanking new Fire. In fact, a quick sampling of 6 books on my Fire shows none of them have page numbers.

Does the Fire not support page numbers? Or is it just an unlucky sampling of books on my part?

One of a few things the Fire seems to not support that are frustrating. I hope they update the reading app to include these things soon.
  • No X-ray feature
  • No page numbers
  • No archiving/syncing with Personal Documents
  • No chapter indicators on the progress bar

For a "flagship device" Amazon sure does seem to have cut a few corners with the Fire's OS and apps. I'm sure it'll get fixed in the long run, but how long? what do they have, like three coders in a broom closet over there?

I'm beginning to wonder if they pulled a Sony as far as design goes. Sony has long been notorious for separating their design teams by divisions so that they rarely, if ever, communicate with each other. This often results in a lack of common features across platforms and devices and occasionally a reinventing of the wheel.

It is almost like the Fire FW designers were not in the same building or even the same town as the Kindle E Ink FW designers. And the Touch FW designers must have been located on the Moon! Amazon should take a long look at the Kindle for iPad app and say this is really good, so let's implement as much of this into the other apps and readers as possible. And the flagship Fire should have the same major, popular features as the Kindle E Inks.

It might be too that Amazon rushed too much to beat the competition. Kobo and B&N both released their similar devices within a few weeks of the Fire. Perhaps a lot of planned features wound up on the cutting room floor for the sake of meeting their rushed release date. I hope these get put into future FW.

I would not be buying Fire based on what you think Amazon might add to it later, like page numbers, collections, etc. Many of us were burned when Kindle DXG came out and everybody assumed it would get the upgrades like Kindle 3. Yeah, we're still waiting.

I just got my Fire yesterday, and I'm not taking any chances. If I don't see a better way to manage content than favorites and the stupid carousel within 30 days, it's going back to Amazon. Why is it so hard for Amazon to understand that for people that have a lot of books, there needs to be a way to manage them. In a way, I'm getting penalized by buying from Amazon - the more books I buy, the more cluttered interface becomes.

Yep, great advice. This applies to any product.

One should return it, and buy it another time.

I bought a DXG but returned it within 3 weeks. I'm glad I did as the K3 which came out a few weeks later was much more advanced. The whole DX model line never caught on with schools and colleges so Amazon quickly abandoned any idea of upgrades. I'm really surprised that they continue to sell them.

Very good advice that I myself have offered for others, and yet sometimes forget myself. I usually say one should never buy the device based on what you hope it will do in the future, only what it can do now. That goes for everything from software fixes to app catalogs - one simply can't rely on those things. And if bugs or features get added, or thousands of great new apps become available, then it's just gravy.

I agree. I've always thought it was silly to wait. You keep waiting, then you'll never buy anything.

They are probably just selling out the remaining stock, since I'm sure they made enough to support their school strategy that never took off...

And worse, the second and fourth features you list above are absent on my new Kindle Touch including no progress bar!

What does that mean? You're saying whispersync doesn't work with Documents? Where did you read that?
