Perhaps your original plan to use something like "[link]" would be better, or be available as an option.

I like the glyph, so I'd keep it optional.

The idea was that missing with a left click could do something unwanted, while missing with a right click didn't. If you get the wrong context menu simply try again.

Well done, that's where it belongs. I was about to post this:

Quote:
But if you miss to the left of the Author button, you'll initiate whatever is in Book Details - which could be a search for that author in the library, or a google search etc, etc. Which is why I set Clicking on author names should: to do-nothing://{author}.

If you miss with a left click on the button in the middle of a horizontal list of Tags you're going to initiate a search for the tag value you hit. Which is why I have Authors, Tags etc as vertical lists.

I'd leave it be, mate.

I doubt 1 in a 1,000 calibre users will make use of any of the Link fields. Apart from me who else made serious use of the Author Link field. As you'll recall I started with Evernote links, when it went into the clouds I switched to OneNote, and when Kovid introduced the calibre:// URL I switched to it faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
I stand by the last para.

@owb - You are conflating two things - chaleys Links everywhere initiative i.e in the Authors, Series, Publisher etc tables and the resultant button, with my Enhancement request for a book-detail option in the calibre:\\ URL scheme.

It seems to me that your games links are using the book-detail option that I requested, not chaley's Links Everywhere initiative; my 1:1000 comment was in reference to the latter.

no - I don't use the book-detail option that much really -- I only run a single library so show-book works better for me in most instances.

I do use the links a lot though. For example, I set up Playnite's 'show manual' menu entry. A show-book if there's only one, or search if there's multiple items.

ID:	200953

Clicking this one opens a search. If there's multiple items its most commonly a manual and strategy guide*:

Size:	415.9 KB
ID:	200954

Then the 'Product Name' links jump back to the relevant game entries in the game launcher. (Well, except the first SimCity.)

Name:	2023-04-10 14_00_38-Category editor (Product Name).png
Views:	73
Size:	29.6 KB

This is useful for jumping to my game docs, opening the one(s) I want, and then jumping back to the game launcher.

*I hoard Prima Game Guides

@chaley: on that topic, did copying links from the books detail pane use to include the ?virtual_library= by default?

This seems to have changed, but it's also possible my memory is screwing up. This is copied when in my docs & manuals VL:

Code:
SimCity for Windows Manual - Maxis

calibre://show-book/_hex_-4d795f426f6f6b73/892
calibre://book-details/_hex_-4d795f426f6f6b73/892
calibre://view-book/_hex_-4d795f426f6f6b73/892/PDF
EDIT: The search URLs contain VLs when copied. Maybe its that I'm thinking of.

On 23 Jan I added the possibility of using VLs on calibre://show-book urls. I didn't change any link generation to include them. Nor am I convinced that they should be included by default.

Yeah, I just figured that out a moment ago when I looked at a scratchpad file and found I'd listed a few encoded_virtual_library strings for easy copy-paste.

@chaley - the highlighting of current cell in Dark mode is a bit askew in the category editors. In the second screen shot the Banking Link field is current - but it's barely visible. The cells in the first column are okay.

The problem is that the category editor requires that the data displayed matches the data in the db. This isn't guaranteed in the item editor -- you might have changed something. Or you might have changed something where the item editor was opened, such as the MDE. The MDE cab ask you when you press a category editor button whether to either cancel or commit all the changes. The item editor can't. Bottom line: this isn't a can of worms I want to open.

I can fix this (I think) by changing the selection behavior. Unfortunately the attempt exposed some strange behavior caused by some idiocies I did a long time ago in that code. I should be able to submit the fixes tomorrow.

I invoke the Item editor from the book list via Shift+F2 in a cell.

What I had in mind was this: the Category editor button would be a Go To, i.e. pressing it would do whatever pressing the Item editor OK does; and then, rather than returning control to the book list, it would take a detour via the corresponding Category editor.

But I can see how that might go against the grain of MDE.

Added: I can add individual Manage Categories→Custom columns→«whatever» to Favourites… that'll do me.

Might make another clone of Favourites for the Manage Category columns for which I want to have something in Links.
