So there's no optimal solution. But I still think via USB is the best solution of all those available. You get the correct metadata (if it's correct) and the cover.

Since I don't know what the OP's priorities are, I'll pass on giving an opinion on the "best solution".

The items your Kindle labels "book" are Amazon purchases . . . while the items your Kindle labels "document" are non-Amazon purchases that you added via email, the send-to-Kindle app, or sideloaded via Calibre or USB. But besides that label (book vs document) which appears under the title, your Kindle doesn't treat them differently. "Books" and "Documents" sort together, display the same, function the same, etc. There's really no difference besides that small label under the title, which serves merely to distinguish between Amazon purchases and non-Amazon purchases. So I'm wondering why it matters to you whether the stuff you're adding is labeled "document" instead of "book"? (This question isn't meant as a challenge. I have OCD, so lots of things matter to me that are inconsequential or irrelevant to other people. I'd be a hypocrite to judge other people for such things. And I certainly understand how frustrating it can be to post a question on a form, only to have people to dismiss your concern rather than offer a solution. I'm asking out of genuine sincerity, to try to understand your objection.) Last edited by A Lurker; 10-21-2022 at 09:23 PM. |

Book Details is a major one. Documents don't have this option. It might not seem like a big deal, but I sometimes find it useful when I forget who the author is and I'm too lazy to go back out of the book to check. Amazon store integration. Since Kindles don't have a blurb/summary displayed for a book, I sometimes check the store info to remind me what the book is about. Goodreads integration. This is more for the people who want to keep track of their reading lists in goodreads. Like automatically updating your goodreads profile of what you're currently reading, and marking it as finished when you're done. You can also rate the book directly when you flip to the last page. Thos are the things I could think off the top of my head. |

Calibre usually sets that metadata, but it might not always be present depending on your calibre settings or if the file was produced elsewhere. Last edited by jhowell; 10-22-2022 at 08:21 AM. |

Where is the setting in Calibre to ensure the metadata is set to book? I just quickly scanned Calibre but didn't see it. |

Calibre will omit the CDETYPE metadata if "Enable sharing of book contents..." is set in the AZW3 or MOBI output section of conversion options, resulting in a personal doc by default. It can also force the CDETYPE to be a personal doc (PDOC) if the "Personal Doc tag" setting is used in MOBI output or the "Create a personal document instead of a book" in KFX output. |

... and filter settings that cause books to not show up. I find the distinction quite useful, actually, but that's mostly because there are specific classes of things (mostly periodicals) that I have Calibre email out to the Kindle, and it's useful to be able to see only those sometimes (by looking only at documents, not books).

What about epub? There doesn't seem to be a comparable setting it output preferences for that format. Will sideloaded epubs automatically be recognized as books or docs? |

EDIT: I just checked my Kindle and the epubs I'd recently sent are showing up as azw3. Thanks for the tip. One thing I've never understood is why I can't use email or the Send to Kindle app to send awz3 files. Despite being the preferred format of Kindles, those are always bounced back with a warning they are not accepted and I must use mobi, epub, etc. Also, it's not listed by Amazon as an acceptable format: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...4490_626412530 Last edited by A Lurker; 10-27-2022 at 08:54 AM. |
