So I investigated the cases I posted above. Turn out I don't even know anything any more.

Basically the EPUB that person sent me has problem with unresolved hyperlink. Which shouldn't be solvable with just adding the UTF-8 encoding, but somehow he said it worked. To make the matter worst, the file already has encoding, but it was using single quote and my tools failed to detect that, so it added another xml encoding header. I tested locally with Kindle Previewer and both file failed to load, but he insisted that it actually fixed his problem. So I don't know anymore and I gave up.

Kindle Previewer finds some issues, but it won't fix anything. I would use epubcheck. To fix it, calibre's edit tool will do the job and its color-coding will give more feedback about the issue.

I have a new problem now. All epubs I'm emailing (after using Modify ePub and Kindle Previewer to ensure they'll open) are working great. However, now that I have an epub that is too big to email, I've uploaded it to Dropbox then gone on my kindle and downloaded it but the kindle won't open it. I've rerun it through the tool suggested above and it still won't open. It's suggesting I download the Overdrive app to open it! With previous too big mobis, I've moved it from Downloads to the Books folder and it's opened in the kindle app fine. But not doing so at all with a too big epub. Any ideas anyone? Am just about to try and upload the original epub to Dropbox rather than the one I ran through Modify ePub plugin and see what happens. Many thanks.

So I am totally confused will our Kindles be using epub files or is this just for the Amazon servers to convert them to the Kindle format then send them to our Kindle

Kindles do not (and probably will never) support EPUB. If you email an EPUB it is converted to a Kindle format by Amazon’s servers and delivered as either a MOBI or KF8 (azw3) file.

If you have an EPUB that is too big to email you can convert it yourself (using calibre or Amazon’s Kindle Previewer) and sideload via USB or the Kindle browser.

Convert the epub to AZW3/KF8 and upload that to Dropbox or sideload it via USB.

So, I've converted them to mobi, uploaded them to Dropbox and downloaded on my kindles and moved into Books et voila ..... opening as usual .... but as a MOBI file rather than epub. So downloading mobi's still works as opposed to epubs!

When the Send to Kindle app is updated to accept ePub, you can also perhaps use that. It has had a size limit of 50MB, which is more than you can generally send as an email attachment.

Why would you use Dropbox to load your eBook on your Kindle when the only reason to email it is to be able to sync? If you are not syncing, I see no reason not to send the eBooks over USB.

Hello. Tomorrow is supposed to be the day (in France, but I guess it is the same everywhere) when one can't send Mobi/AZW files to a Kindle any more - which I've done exactly 33,314 times since 2012 as of today's count ! -. I've received warnings from Amazon for the last few weeks whenever I sent Mobis by e-mail (which is not often), though none when using Send-to-Kindle (my favourite method since you can store e-books in your Amazon library without sending them to a specific device and also go up to 50 kB per file).
I gave a few tries sending EPubs by e-mail (doesn't work with STK so far), specifically my Calibre library catalogue for instance, which I update every week or so, and the least I can say is it wasn't too conclusive. Some were plainly rejected, others had only part of their title or author's name retained when displayed (end of title or author's name cut off, that is, like "William Faul" for "William Faulkner"), and all lost their covers (ie no book cover visible when Kindle off or when beginning to read the book). And none showed any visible improvement upon my Mobis, obviously, on the contrary. The "technically no more up-to-date" reason given by Amazon to end Mobi is an obvious lie, the whole point being to discourage the use of "personal documents" (of various origins...) by basically diminishing their quality while "processing" them instead of letting Calibre do a mostly very good job.
SO : WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO if we are to try and retain decent e-book quality on our Kindles instead of seeing it go down steeply and actually LOSING some positive features by accepting the Amazon method ? (I should add I don't consider converting to PDF a valid method except in very specific cases, since PDF's limitations and overweight are known issues, and I'd rather send than sideload because using the Amazon cloud and collections is practical when you have over 30,000 e-books and the Kindle software will not list more than 15,000 - including collections -, so you have to send quite a few from the Amazon cloud if you want to read them.)
Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts/tricks/complaints to Amazon about this.

Do you have a reference for that?

The only things I have seen are "August" for being able to send EPUB via send-to-kindle and "late 2022" for MOBI being disallowed.

Edit: oops I wrote that backwards. It should be late 2922 for the sending apps and August for no MOBI.

Yes, actually I DO have a reference : here is the mail I received from Amazon every time I sent Mobis by e-mail (latest end of July) - as I said, nothing happens when using Send-to-Kindle software. It's in French but easily understandable I guess.
Here :

"Cher client Kindle,

Merci d'avoir utilisé le service Envoyer vers Kindle pour envoyer des documents personnels vers votre bibliothèque Kindle. Nous avons remarqué que le ou les documents suivants que vous nous avez envoyés à l'adresse 07:53 heures, à la vendredi, 22. juillet 2022 CEST, sont au format MOBI (.mobi, .azw) :

I did the bolding, italicizing and underlining, but Aug. 20th is very clearly stated. Whether that is actually implemented, we'll see tomorrow...
