Some user reported that their EPUB got rejected by Amazon, but is accepted after they run it through this tool. And since that tool only function is to detect the absence of XML encoding specifier and inject UTF-8 encoding header, it's likely that Amazon is now rejecting EPUB without encoding specified.

I have not yet indepedently verify this though.

I tested this just now by emailing an EPUB that does not contain a character encoding in its xhtml files. It was accepted by Amazon and it displays on my Kindle with garbled characters as expected. So it not the case that missing character encoding now automatically leads to rejection.

I suspect that some other factor is involved in the reported case. Perhaps rewriting the EPUB inadvertently fixed a problem with its zip file structure or possibly the person was mistaken about the original file being rejected. Hopefully that person will share their file with you so that it can be investigated further.

I will be very surprised if Amazon makes any changes to the way that emailed EPUBs are handled. They are using kindlegen version 2.9, which has been their standard conversion software for a very long time.

I was playing with emailing an ePub to a Kindle and found that the ePub which lacked the correct minimal directory structure was rejected. The ePub had all it's files in the root of the .zip container including the container.xml which must be located in the META-INF directory. It also had the mimetype file compressed which is, again, contrary to the ePub specification. This resulted from the author uncompressing the original ePub to do some image compression and then using a zip utility to add all the files into a new file.

For what it's worth, epubcheck was extremely unhappy with the ePub as I received it from the author.

Using the KindleUnpack plugin to extract epub from azw3 (KF8 to epub) solved this problem. After I did that, I no longer received the error emails from amazon.

If the AZW3 was converted from ePub by either Amazon or the author/publisher and the original ePub was embedded in the AZW3, KindleUnpack will extract that ePub. Otherwise, KindleUnpack will extract the AZW3 to ePub with a lot less mucking around with the file structure and CSS than a calibre conversion. Either way, you don't have access to the original ePub.

OTOH, I won't have to remove my shoes to count the number of AZW3s with the original ePub embedded that I've run into. If nothing else, it comes close to doubling the file size.

I've never seen a KF8 with the ePub embedded.

But it does seem silly to go KF8 > ePub > KF8 when you could just plug in the Kindle and send the KF8 to the Kindle as is.

For me the solution is easy. I load an epub to calibre, convert it to epub again with deafult settings and then send the new epub to kindle using email

You and I might enjoy the learning experience of doing that, but most people probably just want to get it working with as little effort as possible. Especially since different fixes will be needed for different EPUBs and a simple conversion will automatically fix a variety of potential problems.
