Have you checked the manufacturer's site for any hardware driver updates? I've often found that even if you have configured Windows to offer hardware driver updates, they do not appear though the manufacturer site shows them as having been available often for months.

Remember MS wants $$ to 'officially bless' a driver. Many manufacturers of hardware may tweak the generic standard 'chip makers' version to support features on their equipment.
I remember heaving a Turtle beach sound board that Win(XP) would detect the basic chip and that would disable all the surround /optical features.

As we've discovered in another thread, Calibre 6 will not run on too early a version of Windows 10. So kovid's suggestion to update your Windows is the only way to get Calibre 6 to work.

Jon, perhaps we should be asking what Windows and update version they are running before making blanket statements?

@Vaccio, can you supply the output from running winver on your computer? I've attached an image of running it on one of mine.

I've also attached a humourous(?) image of opening Windows Update.

The version of Windows from the debug log in the first post is newer than the version of Windows I successfully have the latest Calibre running fine on. So yes, I think it's way too soon to declare that "Update Windows!" is the only solution. Drivers, sure.

I was wondering about the version since it matches the version number my Windows 11 install shows. So I'm moderately certain that it is not a Windows Update issue but hardware, especially graphics, drivers are a decent candidate.

Yes. Windows 11 still has a version number that starts with 10. Go figure.

I'm more inclined to think it's a borked older installation of Calibre that's the problem. Could still be a graphics card/driver problem, though. But then what graphics card would be sufficient for Windows 11, but not sufficient for Calibre 4.x?

When did Calibre's switch from WebKit to WebEngine happen?

The main calibre program does not use webengine only the viewer and editor do, so that cant be relevant. calibre 4 is where the switch happened, but I dont see how it could be the cause.

Gotcha. I was just looking for a reason why v3 works, but v4,5,6 doesn't. I was thinking maybe the video card was blacklisted by QtWebEngine, but if WebEngine doesn't load with the main program, that can't be it.

Everything is up to date...perhaps is the problem with the blacklist?

What's your video card, and what's the driver version?
