I’ll let Jon talk about the bezels if he’s inclined to comment further on the comparison, but they really do make the nook look bulky. |

On a normal page, the Kobo shows 23 lines of text and the Nook shows 22. But to get Kobo to show those 23 lines, I had to hack it to shrink the header and hide the footer. Out of the box, Kobo can be pretty wasteful. Quote:
One other thing is I think the Nook's layout is better. Even though the lines of text are the same, there's a large gap between 'Laws'' and 'place' on the second line. Those weird gaps show up often on the Kobo. Sometimes multiple times in the same sentence. I've attached another photo*. This is text from a regular, in chapter page. Both readers have the front light cranked to 100%, both running Georgia. Better lighting conditions. What I'm looking at here is the italicized paragraph, particularly the second line. Kepub spacing is a mess. I'm not even saying Nook is better. Maybe Kobo's ePub renderer is just as good as Nook's. But I'm using Kobo's custom format on their device. They really should work on that thing. *My Pixel tends to fisheye when I get too close to something, so if you see weirdness there, it's the camera, not either device. It also looks like the right hand edge of the photo started swimming out of focus. Sorry. I did the best with the tools I have available ![]() Last edited by ZodWallop; 07-01-2020 at 01:25 PM. |

It's fine for my purposes. Nothing's amiss in the reading. But it's an interesting curiosity. |

And I've told you enough times that I'm not gonna switch to ePubs on Kobo. I like Kobo. But they should do a better job on the format that they created. Kindle used to get grief for their poor layout and they changed it. |

I also use Publisher's Default, unless it's annoying, but that's quite rare for me. To be honest, I feel like a lot of you are way too picky! haha

As a graphic designer, I tend to use Publisher Default because, like you, I want to preserve the book designer’s vision for the book, be it with body text or headers. I haven’t encountered any of the monstrosities that others have complained about here, but if I ever do, I’m glad I can rectify it by selecting my own font. Not every book designer knows what they’re doing. That being said, unlike pbooks, ebook design changes the moment users adjust side margins and font size. Layout becomes fluid. Soon nothing but the font remains of the original designer’s intensions. It’s both the reason I tend to stick with Publisher Default and why others have no regard for it. ![]() ~Dˢ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

As for line height, you could call them gaps when the line height is too large. ![]() Why would you not switch to ePub what with all the display issues with Access (KePub)? RMSDK (ePub) no longer slow to highlight and it's not too slow. Plus the display is much better. You can still go KePub if you are reading eBooks with images you may want to zoom and if the eBooks have footnotes. But for a bog standard novel, ePub is better. |

It's not a case of being picky for me, but rather crappy eyesight to begin with that just gets worse as you get older. For years I stopped reading because the paperback text was just too small for me to read for more than 5 minutes at a time. Ereaders let me read again, but still I need better contrast and thicker text for my eyesight than what most fonts give you, or it's back to not reading again. I think many of us fall into this category.
