My husband is happily using his 2nd gen Paperwhite. It is still "useful" for the vendor because we still buy books to read on that device. The hardware of that model won't support newer firmware, but saying it isn't useful isn't really correct.

A device that's been end-of-lifed does not mean it's no longer useful. It just means it's not getting any new features. Sometimes end-of-life does mean it's not useful. I had an HP laser Printer that was end-of-lifed because HP decided not to release a 64-bit driver that worked with Windows 8/10.

So basically, I got screwed over for lack of a printer driver.

I agree with your definition of "end of life". I don't agree that it matters very much for an ereader.

My husband ist still using the original Paperwhite. First one that came out. I hated that thing. No buttons, horrible shadows on bottom, he doesn't care. He reads his sci fi books on it. He is happy with it. It still works. He buy books, he reads books. I gave it to him shortly after I bought it as it was useless to me. But he is fine with it. It still does what it was designed to do then. Nothing was taken away.

It may matter for those stuck on 5.12.4 with no way to get rid of it.

I agree that if the update is causing bugs for the PW3, and Amazon removed it due to that, they now need to release an update to fix it for PW3 devices. This isn't the fault of PW3 users and they shouldn't be stuck with a buggy device because of a buggy update release. I need to open mine and see if I updated it back when, and if it's having any problems due to this - hopefully not.

The problem was that Amazon released 5.12.4 and then took it offline for download fairly soon after. But Amazon made the mistake of leaving 5.12.4 on the OTA server and thus, a lot of people ended up with 5.12.4 when they should not have. So there are a lot of PW3 with 5.12.4 unable to get 5.12.5.

I took the 5.12.5 the other day. It messed up all my kindle e-readers to where none of the thumbnails for any "new" audibles are showing. They normally appear once the device is done indexing or within a day but nope. They are not showing up at all and its been days. it's driving me out of my mind. book thumbnails are showing just fine and the audible thumbnails show up on tablets just fine.

That's a different issue. Amazon made a mistake. It's happened before. In the past they've fixed their mistakes and hopefully they'll do that this time.

I have a couple of PW3's that I use to loan books to my neighbors. I haven't checked to see if they've updated but they're both working just fine. If they do get the updates I trust Amazon enough to expect fixes.

If they just fix the problems and don't offer any new features that'll be fine with me.

Actually, I'm not sure I want new features on any of my Kindles anymore. They've added new features I've liked such as X-Ray and then added new capabilities to those making them less useful to me. They even made bookmarks less simple so I have to think about them and it's distracting so I rarely use them now.

Lately they've been changing the look and feel, for the sake of doing so, it seems, and that makes it confusing for non-techy people like my neighbors.

Maybe a better plan for all ebook device makers is to save new features for new models. When's the last time you're car got updated with new features?

I don't use the bookmark system all that much. Basically, I mark the passages I'd like to go back to when revisiting key plot developments or those that are so good to read that a simple highlight won't do. I didn't notice any notable UX difference between updates though.

Could you expand on that a little?

Anyway, the only head-turning feature update I have in mind is Reading Insights on steroids. Something improving the tracking features available on Kindle Freetime and those stats available on Kobo ereaders. Average book length, average pages per session, session duration and so on. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's not like the Kindle experience is lacking on anything to begin with.

Nothing about bookmarks has changed recently as far as I can tell. I really like how they work on Kindle and wish it were the same on the other platforms.

I’m having problems on one of my 2 PW4’s with downloading samples: I request, but it never shows up. I have to use some other device to request it. And today it didn’t deliver a purchase I made even though it is my default device. The other PW4 has no trouble with samples.

^ Change the "Deliver To" to the name of the other Kindle - before you download the sample. (If you mean 'by request' that you are doing what I suggested, then I'm stumped.)
