Kindle Firmware 5.12.5
 

A new firmware is out.

Does 5.12.5 fix the problems with 5.12.4?

Oh man, another “Over the next few weeks...” ��

Also "features" which are pointless for normal ebooks (progressive download) or most users (Seamless location, which likely only works with ebooks in Amazon's Cloud and sounds like just tweaking of sync).

Fixing bugs is good.
Getting rid of stupid GUI images such as fake scroll bars or real stupid ones (we need Arrow BUTTONS) and fake slider switches that are really text boxes.

Also they need to stop with the "Download / OTA update first" and OTA/event/timed feature activation, it's idiotic.

What needed to go from, 5.12.4 is the excessive battery drain.

I see that the download page still shows version 5.12.3 as the latest release for the PW3 (7th generation). 5.12.4 is still on the download server for that model, but is not advertised as available.

I wonder if Amazon is done issuing updates for that model.

I'm afraid that they gonna stop support the device 😦

If Amazon is done updating the PW3,there will be a lot of pissed off users.

I have the 5.12.4 on an older PW3. I swapped the "new one" I got when the PW4 came out with my wife as I mostly use the Kobo Libra now. No issue with the battery usage, it's just a poor GUI design. Haven't charged it for weeks.

Following are some additional changes that appear in the 5.12.5 firmware. I do not know if or when they will be activated.

• "MRPR Sheet View" aka "bottomsheet". This appears to be related to the upcoming "updated page location dialog" mentioned in the firmware release notes. Appears to show when and on what device the last jump between pages was made for the current book.
  
• Delete a book from the user's account and also return a purchased book for a refund. "Your refund will be credited to your original form of payment within 3-5 business days." Reasons for the return: Accidental purchase, Compatibility issues, Defective content, Digital rights restrictions, Download problems, Found a better price elsewhere, Offensive content, Quality issues, Unwanted purchase.
  
• Minor changes in the code that supports the "Kindle Curator" feature. This is a potential future feature that shows the cover of the book currently being read as a screensaver.

Love your sneaking around the binary. What tool do you use to do it? Just a hex editor looking for strings?

Is there a reason to stop supporting the PW3 other then to get people to bu the PW4?

Can you see support fr the PW3 in 5.12.5?

I use KindleTool to unpack the firmware and then I search for strings and sometimes decompile Java.

I only examine the firmware for the Kindle I own (Oasis 2).

I don’t know what to look for that would indicate anything about PW3 support.
