Q: Update Available notification changed?

No biggie, but there used to be (IIRC) a popup if there was a new update available, like the second picture.

Now there's a 'Status Bar' notification (first picture) that I almost overlooked during my usual "It's Friday, let's see if there's a new version' check

When I click it, then I get the 'usual' popup and the [X] Show notification box has always been checked

Just wondering

No there hasn't been any change. You probably accidentally closed the popup without noticing. When an update is available it always shows up in the status bar as well, that has been the case for many years.

Always a possibility, but as an experiment I uninstalled 3.40.1 and reinstalled 3.39.0

Opening the program, didn't display the popup until I clicked the statusbar link

@phossler - Maybe the popup popped-up behind the main window and you hit Escape when the main Window was unresponsive. But if it happened twice...

If it happens again, and you want to invest the time, try starting calibre with no plugins.

I believe the popup only shows 1 time per day. So if you dismiss,itwont show again that day, even with a reinstall

@BR -- is there a CLI option to start w/o plugins?

@theducks -- ahh, something to try tomorrow.

It's really not a big issue, but anytime something changes, I always wonder

Assuming calibre.exe is in your PATH

calibre --ignore-plugins

I think that's the only way

The popup is only shown once per updated version. So downgrading and trying again will not work.

Is that status store somewhere that I could manually change in order to fake it out?

Like I said, this is not a biggie, but it has me curious

It is stored in dynamic.pickle in the calibre config directory. You can delete the file and then restore it after your experiments.

Finally got back to my main PC

FWIW, moving dynamic.pickle and then starting 3.39 showed the popup dialog box like before. I installing 3.40.1 created a new dynamic.pickle (smaller) and everything looks the same as before

Do I lose anything by NOT restoring the original dynamic.pickle?

yes a whole bunch of saved last used window/dialog sizes/paths for file open dialogs, etc.
