Tiny flaw in update notification
Now that the new editor is underway, I've started keeping up with the weekly updates. I usually wind up just running the update script I've kept in /opt. However, I run calibre from the command line prompt some time during the weekend and have consistently failed to get a list of new features. Here's what I do:
1) Start calibre from the command line by just typing "calibre". A popup named "Update available!" shows that says "new version 1.21 of calibre is available for download See the _new features_. 2) I click on _new features_ and nothing happens. 3) Disappointed, I exit calibre and then see a couple of new messages in my console window: kfmclient: /opt/calibre/lib/libstdc++.so.6 version `GLIBCxx_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstreamanalyzer.so.0) kfmclient: /opt/calibre/lib/libstdc++.so.6 version `GLIBCxx_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstreams.so.0) Is this something I can fix? I'll have to say that even just getting the popup is enough for me to update manually. I'm using fully-patched 64-bit kubuntu 12.04 LTS on appropriate hardware. Thanks. |

Try reinstalling?
Also, you can do the update automatically, try this script: Code:
#!/bin/bash calibre-debug -c "import urllib as u; from calibre.constants import numeric_version; raise SystemExit(int(numeric_version < (tuple(map(int, u.urlopen('http://calibre-ebook.com/downloads/latest_version').read().split('.'))))))" UP_TO_DATE=$? if [ $UP_TO_DATE = 0 ]; then echo "Calibre is up-to-date" else killall calibre killall calibre sudo python -c "import sys; py3 = sys.version_info[0] > 2; u = __import__('urllib.request' if py3 else 'urllib', fromlist=1); exec(u.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read()); main(install_dir='/opt')" fi ![]() |

Whatever program is set to handle http URLs on your system is failing to run, try changing the file association to some other browser.

Odd as it may seem, it appears there was no association specified at all. My normal use is from the command line prompt in a terminal window and seldom uses file associations. ".htm" and ".html" are now associated with Firefox. I'll find out for sure if that fixes it next Friday, when a new update comes out; earlier if somebody can suggest an effective test.

Just click any web pointing link inside calibre, such as an author name in the book details panel.

I looked around for an epub with a web-pointing link and couldn't find one fast enough, so, using ebook-edit, I fixed one up. Clicked on the blue underlined word and nothing happened. Saved the edited epub and opened it with full calibre, clicked on the blue underlined word and this time I saw the bouncing Firefox ball, so I just waited. Eventually, Firefox came up displaying the remote web site, which is all I really wanted in the first place. I'm sure it'll work just fine this Friday.
