What do you consider 'real westerns'? I read westerns from time to time and am always looking to expand my horizons.

I've found I really enjoy the books written by a group known as the Piccadilly Cowboys (British writers in the sixties who wrote books that had the grit and tone of the spaghetti westerns). I also like some of the modern western writers, Peter Brandvold, Charles G. West.

I've never read a Louis L'Amour or Zane Gray book.
Unless the Wall banger is named Harvey, my guess would be either throwing the book against the wall or the hero or heroine against the wall or the author in some cases.

A "Wall Banger" is a book so bad it incites me to hurl it against the nearest wall. Repeatedly and with great violence, hence the name. And real westerns by my definition include Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, Max Brand and the writers you've mentioned. Not the sort of books whose covers consist of half naked "Western era" couples in the typical Harlequin Clinch pose and have plots more suited to soap operas or even softcore porn.

Wall banger is when the guy and the girl end up against the wall banging each others. Usually with the guy holding up the girl as they do it.

Also Andy Adams western books including Log of a Cattle Drive based on his experience and Willa Cather's prairie trilogy.
