Kobo launches "Super Points" Loyalty Program
Extra! Extra! Read all about it:
https://store.kobobooks.com/kobosuperpoints/member Looking at the books listed for points, it seems kind of expensive. Those bonus days will need to be huge before it tempts me. |

Every dollar spent = 10 points. Books start at 2,400. There seems to be no correlation between what a book sells for in dollars and what it costs in points, but the 2,400 point books I looked at sold for $0.99-$3.99.
I'm all for stores trying new things, but yeah having to spend $240 to get enough points for a $4 book seems really expensive. I don't see this making me buy more from them in an effort to get points, but if I ended up with enough points for a book it'd be a nice bonus. Other points programs for eBooks I can think of would be... Harlequin, where $1 = 100 points and 5,000 points = a free book of your choice that's $8.99 or less. A fair number of free point opportunities too. OmniLit/AllRomance eBooks, where buying 10 eligible books (basically non-agency, all clearly marked) gets you one eligible book free (excluding bundles, box-sets and titles over $25). |

This program seems to be geared to those buying several books a month especially from trad publishers.
Looking at the math: Spending $20/month = $240/yr for 2400 points. VIP members (cost $10) receive 4800pts + 10% off + free book from select group. Unknowns are what type of bonuses would Kobo offer? Can you stack promo codes onto the 10% VIP offer? For Americans visiting New Zealand, this works out somewhat better. The exchange rate makes a big difference. Spending NZ$20/month = NZ$240/yr for 2400 pts costing US$152.30 VIP (NZ$10/US$6.35) receive 4800pts +10% + free title from select group. Also, you can redeem titles from trad publishers except Hachette and Wiley. However, I don't know if Kobo adjusts the Super Points when visiting other countries like they do the gift cards. |

I posted this in the Kobo Coupons thread, but figured it belongs here as well.
The VIP option is couponable. Which I'm not sure they meant for it to be or not. (Seems really weird to allow coupons on the membership.) |

At a rough estimate I'd guess I'll have spent something like 400.00 for the whole of 2015 by yearend. Assuming my spending rate stays about the same, a year from now, at non-VIP status, that would get me a book with a normal price of maybe 7.00 (which I'd usually get for around 5.00 with a coupon).
That would be a nice little bonus, but it wouldn't influence my normal buying decisions at all so Kobo would have all this extra record-keeping to do for no financial gain (at least from me). Actually, since someone mentioned the VIP membership is couponable I went ahead and signed up for 6.50. There isn't enough information to make any sort of rational estimate of if it will be worth it but for that price I'll try it for a year --- so I guess if many other people are as impulsive as I am Kobo will get some money after all. ![]() One practice I dislike is that they'll automatically charge you every year if you don't cancel. I've just added a reminder to my calendar so I'll remember to decide one way or the other. |

I have just went for it. Not sure if it is worth it unless I try it for a year I guess.

Multi-tabbers will probably be disappointed by this program. I've heard that the points get allocated as part of the receipt process, and as multi-tabbing frequently means that some of the purchases don't generate receipts...
