Just curious: davidfor, where do you get the bèta firmwares? You mostly seem to know what is going to happen before a firmware is even released.

Kobo runs a closed beta group. The beta's are distributed and discussed in the group. I and several others here are in the group along with some people who are not MR members.

I'm going to try this firmware on my Kobo Glo HD tonight.

Do we know what it fixes yet?

And then there is the XYL's 10.4AH power bank.

I must admit that very few camping and/or hiking trips have had me reading more than a couple of hours per day which gives me two weeks before I would have to recharge the KA1. Camping is bad enough with all the work of home and damn few of the conveniences but carving out a couple of hours to read is doable, OTOH, after a full day of hiking (walking, climbing, whatever), the only reading I feel up to is the directions on the bottle of Tiger Balm.
Your camping trip is very different from mine. When I go camping, I spend most of my time lying in a hammock reading. I will go on a hike for an hour or so per day, but for me, camping is for relaxing and reading and communing with nature. I will spend at least 5 or 6 hours per day reading while on a camping trip, which at 15 hours of reading time, gives me (at best) 3 days. I do have a solar charger--we use it for our phones and my husband's iPad and charge them at night.

When I go on a camping trip, I usually bring at least 2 e-readers loaded with books so I don't get stuck. I do charge them when we go into town (usually at least one time during the week) as I get itchy when my reader's battery goes below 50%.

Hardware acceleration is turned on by default in this repository for all Kobo devices.

4.2.8283 and beyond will be switching the framebuffer to 32 bit depth. Modifications/code that assume 16 bit will be broken. Kernels will be patched for each generation of device that the update goes out to.

Hmmm... my camping trips typically involve quite a bit more walking, photography, fishing when near clean water, panning for gold in northern BC, etc. Reading is for the evenings when dinner has been cooked and eaten, the dishes are done and the sun is going down. As for communing with nature? I have as little to do with that (pejorative term for a female dog) as possible.

Tested on a Glo HD.Everything works fine.

EDIT: It's trying to sync even if sync is off. Also, the drawing app does not refresh screen on start, unless it's the first thing you start after boot. These are the only bugs I have. I don't have a sleep cover so can't test the battery drain.

How do you check if it's trying to sync?

It's saying "Syncing" at the top. It does that when it connects to the wifi on boot.

There is no option to turn the sync off. The option you are probably thinking about is the auto-sync. This is an full sync that gets scheduled once-a-day and can wake the device from sleep to do. It is intended to be run when you aren't using the device to update everything.

There are other syncs happening at other times. When you open a purchased kepub, it syncs the reading status in case you have read the book on another device. When you open the Pocket list, the articles are refreshed. There is a sync happening when you open the book list, but I'm not sure what it does.

I don't think I've noticed a sync after a restart except when upgrading firmware. As the sync is stopped when the firmware is downloaded and installed, an entry is added to the config file to indicate a sync should be done. This is mainly for the daily auto-sync so that if an upgrade happens in the middle of the night, the sync is done ready for the next day.

OK, so since my Wi-Fi is off I shouldn't be getting any sync attempts, right?

As of yet, I've seen no strange behavior with firmware 4.2.8283, apart from the fact that it seems a bit less efficient when the reader is sleeping. It lost 2-3% battery in about 12 hours. Version 4.2.8110 would lose 3-4% in 24 hours. (So, 1% in 4-6 hours for 8283, and 1% in 6-8 hours for 8110.)

I wonder why Kobo keeps jacking around with this.
