At the moment I also prefer the H20.

Some on this forum often say that people are more likely to post about their reader when something goes wrong - that they aren't as likely to report when things go smoothly. This is true but it's not the whole picture. I say this based on my own experience - for me it's to do with expectations as well - whether some issue is worth posting about depends on what your expectations were. With the H20 I didn't have as high expectations as I do with the Aura One. The Aura One had a "flagship" feel about it - its design and pricing, alluding to an "ultimate e-reader experience".

OK, I am back on 4.2.8283 thinking maybe the sleep cover missed a beat before. Anyway I went back to 4.2.8110. I shall test the new one again and report back.

I do like the screen size and quality of the KA1. I come from the HD Glo.

It's not recommended. Firmware 8283 uses a 32bit/pixel graphics mode. The kernel updates for the KA1 and Aura 2nd Edition support this mode but older kernels may have issues. Feel free to try the new firmware if you want to live on the bleeding edge but be prepared to do a factory reset if you run into problems.

Firmware 8283 is not a nice experience on Glo. The upper half or a little more of the screen is fine, but the lower part is distorted.

You'll just have to wait until Kobo releases a new firmware for the Glo. Until Kobo does, no new firmware will work.

What is even the use case for this? On how many occasions are you going to be away from a wall outlet for several days, while still reading for hours every day?

I don't know, but according to the wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobo_eReader), Glo, and the others are discontinued, so I don't think any new firmwares will come from Kobo in the near future... Could be false info on wikipedia, as you can buy a H2O on kobo store...

Hmmm... Plenty of options. I keep a dual output USB adapter in the car. If we are hiking, I carry a solar powered USB charger though having it mounted outside the backpack when hiking is a bit of a pain but when stationary, it mounts happily outside the tent. And then there is the XYL's 10.4AH power bank.

I must admit that very few camping and/or hiking trips have had me reading more than a couple of hours per day which gives me two weeks before I would have to recharge the KA1. Camping is bad enough with all the work of home and damn few of the conveniences but carving out a couple of hours to read is doable, OTOH, after a full day of hiking (walking, climbing, whatever), the only reading I feel up to is the directions on the bottle of Tiger Balm.

I'd have to disagree. The 3.19 firmware was released long after the earlier Kobo models were discontinued so I think that new firmware for the older Kobo models is going to be released once they get the more serious issues with the KA1 fixed.

A backup battery would work to keep the Aura One charged. I have one that would give the Aura One enough full charges.

As DNSB said, Kobo have been good about supporting "discontinued" models with new firmware to date. At some point the old hardware gets to the point where they don't any more, but since the firmware is mostly identical across devices they don't cut the old ones off. I'd be surprised if it didn't get at least one more update. The KA1 and KE2 seem to be diverging in firmware somewhat, but as long as the HD and H2O level of hardware continue to be supported, the older devices likely will too.

Problem is : "what is a reliable source of facts ?" when talking about kobo.
There is NO source. NO communication

The thing is, most people who are happy with their Kobo don't go looking for a place to post. It's mostly people who have a problem that go looking to post. So just using Mobileread as an example, more people are happy with their Kobo than unhappy.

I know Kobo isn't perfect. But then what Reader is? The Kindle, nook, Onyx, etc. are not perfect either. Perfection is not possible.

In this case, Wikipedia is wrong. The Aura H2O has not been withdrawn and is still for sale everywhere.

And for my curiosity, how much more communications does Kindle do for their ereaders?

I'll take some credit, but there are plenty of others with info.

You mean just like the "Experimental browser" on a Kindle?
