The problem for Kobo is that there is no device driver to release. They are mounted as a USBMS device using the drivers supplied as part of the OS. It might be fixable via a firmware update. That could make the device present itself in a different way that is acceptable to Windows - including old versions. But for anyone who doesn't have WiFi, they will have to find a non-updated PC to do the install.
Problem is, Windows doesn't even see a device. I'd have expected an "unknown device" message, but you don't even see any indication that an USB device has been attached (the same for my Garmin).

You don't see "Unknown device" in the device manager?

I tested my Kindle PW 3 on win 10 + anniversary update. On first connect I got a message saying errors were found on the Kindle drive, I selected scan and fix, then I got a message saying the scan found no errors. After that rigamarole, both windows and calibre workedfine with the Kindle.

I know someone who is going to be installing the Anniversary update soon and will be able to test it with a Kindle and a Kobo. I'll report the results when I have them.

Of course, that particular bug has been around since Windows XP -- and they're not fixing it because they call it a "feature".

Yeah, I dont know why they dont change the wording of the original message to something more like "The drive indicates it could have problems, run a scan to check".

I have confirmation that Kobo Readers do not work with Windows 10 Anniversary Update. So if you have a Kobo, do not update of it won't work. There may be a solution, but it's untested and when it is tested, I'll post here.

I got that message with my Kobo too on my updated work PC. I ran the scan on my sd card and found no errors. Windows sees the Kobo as a drive and assigns a letter, but says please insert disk when trying to access. The sd card which of course gets its own drive letter is seen and works just fine.

A workaround is to put your books on the Kobo's SD card. That is recognised by Windows.

That will work as long as your device has an SD card. Kobo Glo HD owners will be out of luck.

A valid point to be sure. I'm sure that Kobo will quickly resolve the issue. It would appear that their firmware is not responding in the way that Windows expects a USB mass storage device to respond.

It's something Microsoft changed. It was working fine with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and the first two versions of 10.

Another way to block the update is if you are using a WiFi connection such as a laptop or tablet, set your internet connection to metered. Large updates won't be downloaded. I tried this earlier and when I did a check for updates the Anniversary Update was not shown.

Yes, clearly it's due to a change in the way that Windows talks to mass storage devices but, given that (by all accounts) the overwhelming majority of mass storage devices still work fine, the issue appears to be, as I said in my previous post, that Kobo's firmware isn't responding in the way that the new Windows driver expects a mass storage device to respond, hence it may well require a Kobo firmware update to resolve the problem.

Hopefully this will be resolved later in August. But for now, I'm not updating so I'm good to go on my Laptop and Surface Pro 2.

I've installed the Anniversary update. Up until now I only had one problem, and that was a gigantic Steam update that seemed to load the hard disk to 100%, and then it hung. (I only have one game on Steam.) In the end I had to kill it, and reboot the computer. I had to remove Steam because it wouldn't work anymore. This weekend I'll reinstall it.

Besides this, I've not noticed anything strange.
