Groupon has a deal on the 2nd gen Nexus 7 for $100. It's only 16GB but still a good deal.

Thanks, apesmom. That really is tempting, though the difference in dollars is appreciable. I'll go away and brood on it.

Yes there are black bands when watching some videos, if this is the type of thing that might annoy you I would suggest getting the black model instead of the white or gold as they are less apparent.

The fingerprint scanner works suprisingly well.

I haven't spent enough time on it yet to get a sense of battery life. Touch Wiz is not annoying me yet but I'm still not a fan of the hardware home button.

If you are still following this thread, I have a small question...why did you buy the Samsung version instead of the Samsung/Nook version? Would the Nook version be hampered by the Nook skinning? I still haven't decided between the two.

All things being equal (i.e. price and specs) I would never chose a closed ecosystem device over a more open one. Granted google play is available on the Nook but can the Amazon app store also be installed? Honestly, I have no idea how locked down the Nook version is, if at all, but why even consider it unless you absolutely love their native reading software. Personally I think are too many 3rd party reading apps that do a better job (Mantano, Aldiko and MoonReader to name a few).

I think the catch to the Samsung Nook is you can't uninstall the Nook App.
If it is anything like my Kindle pre-installed Android tablet.

If it has Google Play, more than likely you can install Amazon.

Yes, 'unknown sources' can be enabled for sideloading the Amazon app store if one were to want it.

Not 100% sure as I don't have one, but everything I've seen is that it's not really locked down at all. It's literally a Samsung tablet with a Nook skin/launcher built in instead of Samsung's Touchwiz as far as I can tell. The only compelling reason I can see to get the Nook version would be if I could get it for substantially less than the regular one. What happens when it becomes an "old" model? Does the built in Nook stuff no longer get updated while the regular Google Play Nook app continues to receive updates? I don't know the answers to that but don't have tons of confidence in B&N keeping up with 'old' models as they go off sale.

Google Play doesn't have the Amazon app store (or any other third-party app stores). It must be sideloaded to non-Amazon devices and can in this case.

I finally made my big decision, thanks to all who answered my picky questions in this thread and others. For me, the Samsung Galaxy Tab s2 is the best of all worlds. The screen is gorgeous...that is for sure! Every good thing others have said is true. I chose the non Nook version just because of nagging doubts about the future. I have downloaded the Nook app and I do like it....as well as kindle app calibre companion and moon+Reader Pro(my fav app). Just love reading on this tablet!!
Unfortunately for me the finger print scanner did not work..probably I messed it up somehow! Luckily I do not lock my devices.

My bad. I missed one little word in that sentence. I overlooked the app. I was thinking Amazon store.

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it. After 5 months with mine I've no problems at all and I use it several hours everyday.

If you're going to put a case on it I highly recommend the RooCase Origami cover, it's thin and light and allows you to set it in portrait orientation for reading. The fact that this case (or one like it) wasn't available for the asus zenpad is one of the reasons I chose the Samsung.

I've just bought the Samsung Tag S2 8 and its a beautiful device. I even think its nicer than my ipad mini 4. I use the Kobo and Kindle apps as well as Moon Reader for text to speach.

Thanks for the recommendation for the Roocase

I bought the Turquoise one and its lovely. The stand options work perfectly in both portrait and landscape. I also put a glass screen protector on it as well (my first time with one of those) and i'm well pleased with it.

Is the samsung galaxy tab s2 still comfortable to hold and read when you are using the Roocase Origami cover? I have checked out the reviews but that is not mentioned. I would probably fold it back to read so that would be important...that it is still comfortable to hold when reading.
I haven't tried out the text to speech option....sounds like I will have to give it a go.
