Sorry to burst your misinformed bubble, Tony, but most of the country is run by "old" people.

I come from a long line of intelligent family members who lived well into their 90's and died with their minds still sharp as tacks. And while I wear glasses for distance, my near vision is 20/20, as well as my mother, who's approaching 90 and still a voracious reader.

You are welcome. I have a great aunt that is 96 and reads more than I do.
All the ones I know over 70 love their ereaders.
If a person read as a young person, they tend to read as an older person.
I have worn glasses since elementary school and bifocals since I was 21.

Oh heavens, no. I never even bought the second one. When I missed the sale, I decided to hold off a little longer to see if it goes back on sale for the holidays.

However, I'm still not completely decided on getting one. My fearful side wants a backup now, but my rational side shares Harry's viewpoint.

Same here. My mother (mid 80's) reads circles around me. And she reads lightning fast. She puts me to shame, lol.

I find that most people enjoy reading even MORE as they age. I'm only in my 50's, but I find that with each passing year, my hunger for knowledge increases substantially. My kindle archives can attest to that. I've bought more books this year than I did in the first 4 years (put together) since I got my kindle.

Yeah, but even @ $30 off, it still costs $250 ($50 more than the Voyage's normal price. And $80 more than just the kindle alone when it was on sale). And I don't need any of the bundled accessories.

The Voyage on sale without the bundle was only $169.

EDIT: oops, I meant $250 (for the bundle), not $150. Correction made.

My mom will read two Argentinian short stories tonight. She is going to college. She is 68.

I am almost 50. Now I am reading more but finding fewer book.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. My taste gets more discriminating the older I get. When I was younger, I was much more tolerant of poorly written novels.

Plus, the longer you've been around, and the more movies and books you've watched/read, the harder it becomes to find new and original ideas.

Most of the fiction I come across these days have plots that've been done so many times, in so many ways, making it too easy to predict everything. I hate being able to predictable everything.

I believe I implied as much (that it is 'savings' only to the extent that you would otherwise purchase the accessories). Given what must be at least 500% markup for those particular accessories, it amounts to profit even with the discount.

Such as it is, the deal goes until Jan 1, which I take as perhaps one of the strongest indications so far that there will not be a Voyage 2 this year.

Ah - but have you also read more book this year than in the first four years? If not, you might be in need of this thread.

But by the time I realized the rumor wasn't true, the sale was over and I'd missed my chance to get it at sale price.

I did (and can) understand that. However, do think about the fact that batteries start to decline as soon as they're produced. If you'd buy three Kindles, the battery of the third one would probably be completely useless by the time you get to using it. And then, the device is so old that there's a chance that you may not even be able to get a replacement battery for it.

Precisely. The battery on a 10-year-old Kindle is going to be completely dead. The life-span of a lithium battery is a clock that starts ticking as soon as the battery is first charged, and nothing can stop it. The average lifetime of a battery is around 5 years.

The lifetime does depend on the device, though.

Let's say that for each year a battery loses 25% of the capacity it has remaining. (I'm just making these numbers up, but it illustrates the point.) Then you will get this use out of it:

Year 1: 100%;
Year 2: 100 * 0.75 = 75%
Year 3: 75 * 0.75 = 56%
Year 4: 56 * 0.75 = 42%
Year 5: 42 * 0.75 = 31%

A laptop battery that starts out with 6 hours of usage will have declined to a maximum of two hours of use after 5 years. While still usable, it can be a pain in the neck.

A Kindle on the other hand, starting out with 6 weeks, will drop down to 2 weeks of usage. That's a huge drop, but an e-reader which lasts for two weeks is still perfectly usable.

I've noticed that, after three years, I'm starting to see the "Your Kindle is almost empty"-warning. Previously, I never saw it; I've always connected the reader to the computer to upload books before it appeared, keeping the Kindle charged perpetually. Now I don't seem to be able to manage this anymore. (I'm not reading slower or more books between charges AFAICT.)

But at some point a battery dies entirely. That's the issue here. It might be after 3 years; it might be after 7 years. But it will happen at some point.

Dont be speechless....IT ALL TRUE...lol
People lose interest in things as they get older because they have done so much. or
cant do it anymore.Books are no different. You said yourself that its harder to find things to read. Thats age and experience talking.

Just putting that new ereader never coming out or buying a supply of a dozen or so current models into perspective thats all.

Anyways there WILL be a new voyage...you will not be using the current model 30 years from now and if kindles are still being made you will have the new better one. So i would save your money.
