In kepub hyphenation is in my language (Dutch / Netherlands) really totally wrong, it is so bad that it is almost impossible to read, words are totally broken at wrong places, by example the word "antwoordde" (means answer) is ant-woordde but it says antw-oordde. Other example, allemaal (all) it must be broken as alle-maal but it breaks as all-emaal. That are 2 examples on one page. Other: glimlachte (smile) the right way is glim-lachte but it breaks as gliml-achte and there are literally 100 examples in one book, while on epub format there is no hyphenation. Is there a way to put hyphenation in kepubs off, it is just unreadable. Tried it with 4 kepubs but there isn't one page okay. For example, the main role is a inspector called Opperdoes, the right ways are Opper-does or Op-perdoes, but it brakes with Opperd-oes. It is totally wrong with all Dutch kepubs, please tell me there is a way to put hyphenation off, it is Terrific! Tried 4 kepubs, not converted but I had to delete them and convert them to epub, is it patchable? Dutch dictionary is installed, but it is in some pages at least 8 times wrong. On 2 Glo HD devices on 3.15,it is unusable! Last edited by Nick_1964; 06-03-2015 at 09:18 PM. |

I used to put "adobe-hyphenate: none;" in the kobo_extra.css file to stop hyphenation but this hasn't been working lately. I think more and more CSS files are including their own adobe-hyphenate property, but I haven't had time to check it out.

That doesn't work in kepub files, imho, because for kepub the reader doesn't use the adobe reader but it's own, there are 2 reading apps inside, one for epub and one for kepub.

<hijack> Just in case someone else stumbles across this thread and wants to know how to disable hyphenation in epubs, GeoffR posted in another thread that I might try using body, div,p { -webkit-hyphens: none !important; } in kobo_extra.css. I haven't tried this yet, but I'm betting it will work. I had been using adobe-hyphenate: none, which worked until CSS files started using -webkit-hyphens instead. </hijack>

You have the N905C version of the Touch. It uses the "Mark 4" update package. You will be safe using that. For the N905 and N905B, you have to just use the KoboRoot.tgz from inside one of the packages.

The EPUB reader always used adobe-hyphenate. The KEPUB reader always used -webkit-hyphens. This hasn't changed.

I have started chess before upgrading. Chess appeared on the front page of the reader. Then upgraded firmware and chess remained on the front page, so I started it and it worked. So it is not removed completely from the firmware, just its menu item disappeared. Probably it can be started using a special ebook.

The trick is to use a plugin in Calibre, called "Hyphenate This!". As it says about itself: "Add soft hyphens to AZW3 ebooks and Kindle will hyphenate text flawlessly! Get more realistic feeling and nice justification." I have hyphenated 400+ (Hungarian) ebooks in less than 10 minutes.

I'm still on fw 3.12 and installed the hyphenation files for Dutch (because the Kobo files didn't work, see the bug report thread for the details; this issue might be fixed with fw 3.15). Quote:
You need to patch the firmware with the fixed hyphenation files. I don't have those hyphenation issues most words are correctly hyphenated. It is not perfect; it is a automated process. The accuracy is about 80-90%. Note: I only read regular epubs not kepubs. Code: LEFTHYPHENMIN 2 RIGHTHYPHENMIN 3 IMHO, the default "5" hyphenates too few words.
