I had a Samsung monitor that had a problem while it was under warranty. I called about it and they sent out a refurbished monitor. I could not tell it was refurbished and it worked perfectly.

Your choices are:
Keep the bad reader and do nothing but suffer with it; Buy a new reader; Let Amazon send you a free refurbished PW. Do you really need others to tell you what the smart choice is here? ![]() |

I've had about 8 Kindles of various types since I started buying them. I keep getting the new models when they come out. A couple of times I've had problems and they've been replaced by refurbished ones. They came in new boxes with all the accessories. They were indistinguishable from my new ones. They've all been perfect. I think I still have one or two of them but I can't really be sure since there's no way to tell without going back and checking my orders.
Amazon does take customers very seriously. If you get one and you aren't happy with it they'll find a way to make you happy. My suggestion is don't worry about it. Amazon is that good! Barry |

But even if there is a little wear on the refurbished PW, doesn't the one you currently own have a little wear also? I'm not quite sure what the problem is here. |

Thanks for all the advice guys. Really appreciate it.
Just to clarify if I do indeed get a refurbished replacement I wont get a new warranty will I? Also where you get a kindle with plastic cover on the kindle and the packaging being sealed does that mean it is brand new and not refurbished? |

I am giving my PW1 to a friend and once I do a factory reset she will have no way of knowing, other than my telling her, that it's used. |

Note that if you specifically purchase a refurbished reader like I did, it comes with the full 1 year warranty, just like buying a new reader would. But that's not what you're doing, so don't confuse the 2 different instances when you hear us comment that they have a full warranty. No. They repack them up so they ship well and stay looking like new. You really should not be able to tell the difference between a new or refurbished Kindle. It might have "refurbished" printed on the box somewhere or a sticker, I can't remember how mine came. |

I answered this question in post #8 above. Was my answer unclear?

Some people Harry need to be told multiple times. I am sorry to say sometimes myself included.

Booklover1: "I have had a Paperwhite 2 for some time now. However I have had issues with battery draining and some weird grey line on the bottom of the screen."
Wow! Some time now. How about, it's about ready to go out of warranty. There are issues. Battery draining? My battery drains as I read my books. Doesn't yours? Weird gray lines on the bottom of the screen? Are these the shadows that are on all Paperwhites and have been on her Paperwhite for almost a year? They could be something else but we don't know. And, this customer's solution: a new Paperwhite and a new warranty. This could mean a lifetime of never going out of warranty, couldn't it? |

Thanks for the advice everyone. Helped alot.
Seems Amazon said they will offer a new replacement. They said it wont be refurbished. Who knows though? Think I might be getting the latest PW2 which is the 4gb version. Again not 100% sure about this. One question the poster above stated that the grey shadow is on ALL paperwhites, how do fellow owners read with this slight distraction? |

Is it worse than the uneven lighting when reading a paperback? Or when attaching a separate light to an ereader? I just posted in the other thread about the cause of it, and it's perfectly normal to see that slight shading on all front-lit ereaders. The higher you turn up the light might make it look more pronounced, or on mine, it actually makes it even out more, hiding the shadows more. It's not a PW problem, just the nature of placing LEDs at the bottom of the screen just under the bezel.

If I am being honest I cant really compare it to when attaching a light to an ereader as I havent used that method before. Its not putting me off the book, but I usually read near full setting and sometimes I just look at the shading at the bottom as it does appear more. I will try to adjust the setting to medium to see if it reduces the shading. I dont think its needed to put the setting at full tbh. |
