Paperwhite Replacement

Hi everyone im new hear so I hope you can help me.

I have had a Paperwhite 2 for some time now. However I have had issues with battery draining and some weird grey line on the bottom of the screen.

Amazon have said they will replace it but not with new one but refurbished one.

I am really shocked and disappointed about this as I thought it would be brand new replacement when my device is still in warranty.

For those of you who have had a replacement in warranty was it a brand new or refurbished replacement?

Thanks, hope you guys can help a newbie out.

It's entirely normal to get a refurb as a replacement. Nothing to be "shocked" about; there's nothing inferior about refurbished devices.

Amazon will generally replace with a brand new unit only if your unit is less than 30 days old. As Harry said, there is nothing wrong with getting a refurbished unit.

Refurb units generally are returned items where there's nothing wrong with them, but they can't sell it as new because it was opened. Or a new reader that required some repair, which means it's as good as new since it was already looked at by humans and any problems corrected. You won't get a used, scratched up screen or body from a refurbished. I'd return it if they shipped one like that. In October they were selling refurbs for $79 and that's when I broke down and bought a PW2, and it's been perfect* in every way, looks and functions as brand new with full warranty.

Sometimes refurbs are a better deal and more reliable since they've already been looked over by humans.

*Perfect as far as a Kindle goes, I still much prefer the Kobo Glo, but not because of any defects as a refurbished unit, there are none.

So if they give a replacement to me it wont have the plastic cover on the paperwhite or the box it comes with being sealed?

I have owned refurbished products previously and have been put off.

Will they give a new full warranty with a replacement?

Your warranty is unchanged; it doesn't "start again" with the replacement device. Eg if you had three months of your 1 year warranty remaining, the replacement will be under warranty for 3 months.

Mine came in a completely sealed new box. It definitely looked brand-spanking new, not a blemish on it anywhere.

So if the current warranty is nearly finished then I wont have warranty at all on the replacement then?

Oh wow, your lucky then. As I doubt mine will be a sealed box with a new PW2 but instead an opened one which has been either used before and returned or repaired.

You will probably find it almost impossible to tell whether or not your replacement Paperwhite is a refurbished model (I'm pretty sure when the original PW was released and there were lots of returns, the only clue was an R on the label on the box).

My first Kindle was bought as a refurbished model. It was in perfect condition, looked no different to a brand new model, and still works just fine 4 years later..

Correct. Getting a replacement does not extend your warranty.

Refurbished devices are reboxed. As others have said, it will be indistinguishable from a new PW2. Why the pessimism?

I have had bad experience with refurbished products in the past so I am hesitant.

Is it possible to get a replacement for free if it is outside of warranty?

Not sure why you think anyone would be due a free replacement outside of the warranty period? While I've never had to do a Kindle return to Amazon, from what I've read they seem very willing to work with customers even beyond the warranty period at times. Say if your refurbished died 3 months and 1 day from now, it's very possible they'll reconsider and send another refurbished unit. But I wouldn't expect that as the norm and I think they look at each out of warranty request on a per-item basis.

So in general, no, you won't get a free replacement from any company outside of the warranty period. Why would they? But Amazon seems more customer friendly in that regard and you might get lucky.

Oh ok thanks for the clarification. It is just that I have read online people getting free replacements even out of warranty.

So what would you and others suggest I do then?

I had a few problems with the PW2 and I dont know if sharing it here will make much difference?
