I notice they do that with video games too. The print where they tell you what you need to run the game gets smaller as the amount of space you need on your hard drive for the game gets bigger. Or they use odd color combo's so that you can't read it easily. At least with printed books (e or otherwise) they don't do that.

No, but the older the used paperback I buy, the smaller the font gets. Fortunately, newer books seem to recognize that paper isn't all *that* expensive and us boomers don't want the print all that small.....

I saw a series about the evolution of English on youtube not so long ago and in one episode they talked about the period in which the KJV was written. Apparently words like Thee and Thou were already a bit dated even then but the translators wanted for their translation to sound old so that people could relate to it easier and so they used the older words even though they weren't used much (if at all) in common speech even at the time the translation was compiled. Sigmund Freud did something similar in his Interpretation of Dream which was published in 1899 but with a 1900 publication date. He wanted his book to reflect the new century with new patterns of thought on the subject so he had the publication date printed as though it was published first in the new century.

I didn't know about "thee," et al. being a little old even in the time of the King James translation. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that. I'm going to see if the episode is still up on YouTube and, if it is, watch the whole thing.

The word "thou," and maybe one or more of the other archaic forms under consideration have almost, but not quite disappeared from the lips of modern English speakers in normal conversation. "Thou," at least, is still still used by folks from northern England up through Scotland.

There actually is an advantage to the use of "thou" over our "you" (some people would say that another advantage is that "thou" sounds more reverential, etc. than "you"). You can determine "number" by the archaic form of the second person nominative forms, where you can't do that with "you." "Thou" is singular; "ye" is plural; But "you" serves as both the singular and the plural. You can know from "thou" and "ye" if the the subject is singular or plural; you cannot do that with "you." Thankfully, the context will indicate that most of the time, but sometimes it won't--you won't know if the text is speaking of one person or more than one person. A practical application: if you are reading in a modern translation and come to the word "you" (as a subject), and don't know if the text is speaking of one person or more than one, you can grab a King James version Bible and find out which one it is by seeing if it says "thou" or "ye"!

Maybe something that you will find funny . . . . I strongly believe in the use of accurate modern translations, instead of the KJV. I have a preacher friend who probably believes that more strongly than I do. He told me that one time he preached a sermon about his feelings, entitled "Let the King die!" (vs. "Long live the King!"), meaning, of course, "let the King James version quit being used!"

The series is called "History of English Language" and is in 8 parts. Part 3 is "The Battle for the Language of the Bible." I don't think the KJV will fade any time soon. It's already over 404 yrs old and still going strong. Probably in part due to the word choices that the translators made back then.

Thanks. That information will save me, and perhaps others, from doing unnecessary searching, especially if we decide to start with "The Battle for the Language of the Bible."
