Free/Bargain Christian Interest October, 2013

Since the other Christian thread just said "free" and things seem to have shifted to monthly threads...

We point out free and bargain Christian titles to each other. Please don't post any self-published books, and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast!

First up, the Baker Publishing Group has a couple of bargain books that just before this post were still coupon-eligible at Kobo in the U.S. using BookRiot50.

First, the oddly-named Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook (Text-Only Edition) is $1.99 before discount and is, as promised, text-only. Here is their excuse (from inside the book):

Quote:
In this text-only edition, there are references to images and maps that are found in the print edition that do not appear in the text-only ebook. The print edition includes more than 1,100 full-color pages featuring some of the best biblical photos and artwork available. However, at the current time, standard ebook file formats are not capable of faithfully reproducing a full-color book of this scope. Because we recognize that many readers will want to take The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook with them on their e-readers, we are publishing this text-only ebook as a convenient, portable supplement to the print edition.
I decided that even so, it was still worth it at 99 cents after the discount at Kobo.

It's also $1.99 at B&N, eChristian and Amazon

Though $9.99, the Google Books edition includes a PDF scan that presumably includes the missing illustrations. I'm not very hopeful, but maybe it'll drop in price in the next few days.

The other bargain is Jesus Mean and Wild: the Unexpected Love of an Untamable God by Mark Galli. It's $2.99, but discountable to $1.49 at Kobo. Also $2.99 at B&N, eChristian and Amazon.

Quote:
God loves you and has a wonderful difficult plan for your life.

The contemporary church loves to paint Jesus as gentle, meek . . . nice. But in this striking book, Mark Galli introduces us to a different sort of savior--one who often makes other people feel decidedly uncomfortable.

Focusing on Jesus as he is portrayed in Mark's Gospel, Galli unveils the power of Christ in his militancy--an aspect frequently ignored in many churches today. Through biblical episodes, stories of saints--classic and contemporary--personal snapshots, and discussion questions, Galli shows that Christ's deep love for his people is richer and more difficult than we imagine. But it is in this persistent, fearsome, and untamed love that we can find true joy.

The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary is $2.99 at eChristian (where it's a DRM-Free epub) and at Amazon. It's not available at all at B&N and is ~$19 at Kobo.

As opposed to the Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook, this one is actually illustrated and the epub is almost 300MB as a result.

Jesus for the Non-Religious by John Shelby Spong is $2.99 at most stores.

B&N Amazon Kobo (not eligible for coupons)

The edition at ebooks.com is a PDF, if that's what you prefer.

The blurb is almost worthless, but here it is:

Quote:
The Pope Describes the Ancient Traditional Jesus; Bishop Spong Brings Us a Jesus Modern People Can Be Inspired By
John Spong is a retired Episcopalian Bishop with fascinating and definitely non-orthodox ideas about Jesus and Christianity. I haven't read Jesus for the Non-Religious yet, but I know from his other books that he doesn't accept the virgin birth as factual and views the resurrection as a spiritual event, rather than a physical reality. He bases his views on the insight that many of the New Testament stories amount to midrashic expansions on ones found in the Old Testament.

That's a Great Question: What to Say When Your Faith Is Questioned by Glenn Pearson is free at eChristian (where it's watermarked, but DRM-free), Kobo, B&N and Amazon.

Quote:
Is the Bible really true? How can I prove it? This book is especially helpful for newer Christians just coming to grips with the implications of the gospel in all areas of their lives.

What do you say when someone at work asks you why the gospel stories differ? How do you answer your neighbor when she asks what you think about all those "errors" in the Bible? Glenn Pearson offers simple, accessible principles that provide any Christian with the tools he or she needs to confidently respond to skeptical inquiries.
When You See the Invisible, You Can Do the Impossible by Oral Roberts is free at B&N. If you want it, I recommened getting it quickly; it was free at Amazon yesterday, but is $4.99 now. I expect B&N to follow suit within a few hours.

Another of the oddly named Baker Illustrated ... (Text Only Edition) series is $1.99 and eligible for Kobo coupons.

The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary (Text Only Edition) is discounted at B&N, Kobo and Amazon.

The text is nicely formatted, but as promised, lacks the "over 500 full-color illustrations, maps and photos" of the paper edition.

Quote:
This nontechnical, section-by-section commentary on the whole Bible provides reliable and readable interpretations of the Scriptures from forty-three leading evangelical scholars. The text-only ebook edition of this information-packed commentary will help you gain a deeper understanding of the Bible in your own personal study or in preparation for teaching. It tackles problematic questions, calls attention to the spiritual and personal aspects of the biblical message, and brings out important points of biblical theology, making it invaluable to anyone seeking to get the most out of their Bible study.

The current David C. Cook freebies are Body Broken by Charles D. Drew and Appleseeds by Betty Huizenga.

Each page links to a bunch of online sellers, most of which have the book listed for free. Google Play still shows $9.99 for each one, but they'll likely switch to free at midnight Eastern US time.

Update: I was hoping that Google had turned over a new leaf, but I guess not. Both books are still $9.99.

Body Broken:

Quote:
As the next presidential election comes into view, Americans are deciding where to stand on key issues. The church has often been as politically divided as the culture, but Charles Drew offers an alternative for people who care deeply about their faith, about Christian harmony, and about the church's calling in the world. In this updated and revised version of A Public Faith (NavPress 2000), Drew helps Christians develop practical biblical convictions about critical social and political issues.

Distinguishing between moral principle and political strategy, Body Broken equips believers to maintain the unity of the church while building their political activism upon a thoughtful and biblical foundation. Drew helps Christians of all political persuasions understand how to practice servanthood, cooperation, and integrity in today's public square.
Appleseeds:

Quote:
Appleseeds is a unique mentoring program for girls ages 9 to 12. The purpose of Appleseeds is to teach young girls how important they are to God, to their family and to others around them. They will learn that they are created in the image of God, that they are valuable to God and others. Like Apples of Gold, Appleseed classes are held in Homes with 'Grammy' mentors teaching the Bible lesson. Moms of the girls will come to help with the etiquette and craft sessions. They will be taught that serving God and others is a high calling, and hopefully, everyone will have lots of FUN in the process.

These three new David C. Cook books are free at B&N, Amazon and Kobo, free and DRM-free at eChristian and ChristianBook. They're not free at Google Play and Sony.

Update: Coldwater Revival and Caught Off Guard are free at Google Play this morning.

The Jesus Life by Stephen W. Smith

Quote:
We've lost the way that leads to life. With competing priorities and rival demands, we're more confused than ever in how to live the life Jesus offers. Is it the church way, the American way, or the busy way? With so many ways facing us, we're more paralyzed than alive; more perplexed than sure; more bewildered than confident. The Jesus Life offers eight compelling ways to help us rediscover what it really means to follow Jesus in the 21st century.
Coldwater Revival by Nancy Jo Jenkins

Quote:
One of Emma Grace Falin's six-year-old twin brothers died while in her care, sending her on a journey that will take her through the dark valley of guilt, sorrow, depression, and anger.

Although she rejects Him, God continues to offer restoration and healing into her troubled life.

Nancy Jo Jenkins has woven an unforgettable tale of shattering loss, desperate grief and despair, and one family's amazing journey to restoration and forgiveness. A masterful debut, Coldwater Revival will forever be etched in your memories and upon your heart.
Caught Off Guard by William P. Smith

Quote:
In his book author William P. Smith bridges the chasm between the heart and the head. Where is the reality of God in the middle of careers and groceries? Why are so many believers frustrated with the enormous gap between what they know about God and how they actually live?

In Caught Off Guard, author William P. Smith graciously addresses these seekers who have become dissatisfied with merely "talking theology" and instead yearn to taste and experience the "real thing", a God who longs for relationship with them. With real stories from today and biblical times, Smith demonstrates surprising and often unnoticed attributes of a loving and purposeful God by proving:

How God draws near to the radically undeserving
How God responds to people who have feeble faith or even active doubt
How God will help you as you seek to live a righteous life
How God changes the people around you by radically transforming your heart, mind and soul

In Caught Off Guard, Smith draws an irresistible picture of the heart of God that shatters conventional wisdom, remains true to biblical principles and invites people to reconsider a deeper trust in our uncontrollable, loving God.

Baker Publishing has a couple of new freebies today.

Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife: True Stories From People Who Have Glimpsed the World Beyond by James L. Garlow and Keith Wall

B&N Amazon Google Play (epub/PDF)

Quote:
What happens when we die? What is heaven really like? How do spiritual beings--angels and demons--interact with us here and in the hereafter? Real-life, credible stories of near-death experiences and spiritual encounters gathered by the authors of Heaven and the Afterlife paint a clearer, fuller picture of exactly what readers can expect when it's their turn to "cross over." These gripping true stories--written from a solidly biblical perspective but accessible to seekers--provide fascinating glimpses into the spiritual world around us and the one that awaits us.
Everything the Bible Says About Angels and Demons: What Do Angels Look Like? Is Satan a Fallen Angel? Are Demons Real? Are Angels Sent to Protect Us? by Bob Newman

B&N Amazon Google Play (epub/PDF)

Quote:
Readers' fascination with angelic beings--both dark and light--continues to grow. Numerous authors have given their ideas about angelic beings, but it's time to hear what God has to say. All the scriptural references on the subject have been collected and explained in a clear and concise format. The book's length and focus make it perfect for readers on the go who love the Word of God.

The Swedish Atheist, the Scuba Diver and Other Apologetic Rabbit Trails by Randal Rauser is free at B&N and Amazon.

Quote:
In the real world, we don't usually sit in lecture halls debating worldview issues in systematic arguments. Chances are that we're more likely to have haphazard, informal conversations over a latte in a coffee shop.

Meet Randal Rauser, a Christian, and Sheridan, an atheist. Over the course of one caffeinated afternoon, they explore a range of honest questions and real objections to Christian faith. Do people hold to a particular religion just because of an accident of geography? Is believing in Jesus as arbitrary as believing in Zeus? Why would God order the slaughter of infants or send people to hell? How do you know you're really real, and not just a character in someone's book?

Their extended conversation unfolds with all the rabbit trails, personal baggage and distractions that inevitably come in real-world encounters. Rauser provides substantive argument-based apologetics but also highlights the importance of apologetics as a narrative journey. As we get to know Sheridan, we better understand the personal history that drives his atheism and the issues that motivate his skepticism.

This imaginative narrative is a model of the rigorous pursuit of truth in conversation. Apologetics is not just about winning arguments; it is a transformative apprenticeship where eternity touches down in everyday life. It's about the discovery of truth through winding, weaving, honest, aimless, pointless and completely purposeful conversations between people who desperately want to know the way things really are.
