Well, I also use that (well actuall, the SAP version of tar, but it's the same), but that's when I work on Unix, when most of the time my hands are at the keyboard. I don't like cygwin very much on Windows instead. I "feel" it clumsy and not so well integrated. But I know it's just me.

Yeah well, the ease of use between 7-zip and Winrar are pretty much the same: all these kind of software's GUI looks alike, imho.
Of course a cli compressor might be easier - that depends on habits, however - but tar isn't in the comparison in the Windows world.

I believe zopfli can do some really neat things with compression.

And anyway, there is much debate between the relative merits of the two, based AFAICT on gut feelings, it's like vim vs emacs in miniature. I simply don't care, because 7-Zip is free, and works very well.

Not as well integrated maybe. I still find it faster than messing around with Explorer. And having various tools I use all available at once. Granted, linux is much better. But if I have to use Windows, Cygwin makes it easier.
Possibly because I get to stick with one paradigm.

The paid version of Winrar is I am sure less in-your-face.

I don't know what you are talking about -- this is the light side!

5.6.1.0.2 just installed and didn't break my jailbreak; just needed to re-install my screensaver hack and all was well.

And why is that, giving the fact that their interface works equal?

At the cost of a processing time 81 times longer, as far as I read... I didn't know zopfli but I see Google does not advise it as a general use compression method. However, what one prefers is really a matter of tastes, and charachteristics he values the most.

Of course. Being free is an advantage, if the rest is acceptable. Not to say that paying a developer for its work is bad, if his work is what we prefer, on the other hand.

Oh, but I don't. Nothing I can stand less. I use Total Commander, Windows version of glorious midnight commander. Yes, it's payware, but it's worth every dime, and has verious tools available, to use which I don't have to lift fingers from the keyboard, just like cygwin. But I see your point: if you do extensive work all on Unix, using cygwin on Windows has its advantages for sure.

I'm thinking what I could write about that is even more off topic, but nothing comes to my mind, so I will stop here.

This is all absolutely fascinating ;-)

For completeness/closure... I reset the Kindle (still on 5.4.3.2) and redownloaded the jailbreak. One of those was the magic trick, because the jailbreak has just worked first time for me. I suspect the reset, because before doing that (but after the downgrade) when I plugged the Kindle into the Linux box, it was asking what program to open the Kindle with, rather than opening the file manager automatically. Maybe in the docs/first post, add a suggestion to reset as well as restart, if the "update" option is greyed out?

I'm still using command-line unzip ;-)

Cheers,
Dave

Interface "works" equal, but isn't equal to use. I prefer the 7-zip interface after being a long-time winrar user.

*) Understood.
That is the official government position.
But it is a very big country and it will take them awhile to reach everyone.

*) Hmm....
Now that might just be your network provider.
It would depend on their access to an International Backbone, also still in very limited supply.

Minor note:
Most of the traffic has to go East from China to reach even Europe.
When more Westbound (across Russia) service is available, things should improve for China.
That involves distances of half the world, with service for half the world's population - a huge undertaking.

But if you really care about minor increases in compression effectiveness, then surely that is irrelevant.

True, true, and I am totally cool with donating for various FLOSS projects I really appreciate. If Winrar had significant advantages over the free alternatives, I would pay for it, since it doesn't (and on general principle I hate any program that would have anything to do with ads -- or evil toolbars -- no matter what else it might bring to the table) I would only pay for it by means of "donations to FLOSS projects" which it isn't.

I'm sorry, this has probably been answered before, but the thread is quite long.
I have a Kindle PW2 with 5.4.5.1 firmware and 9017 etc. SN.
I downgraded to 5.4.3 in order to JB and then appied the JB, everything went smoothly.
Now I'd like to prevent silent OTA updates.

It seems that I should upgrade the fw to 5.4.5.1 again, having a SN that begins with 9017, right?
In order to keep my device jailbroken, do I have to apply the bridge before or after upgrading to 5.4.5.1?

Thanks.

@guerrilla: The bridge is part of the JB. If you applied the JB, the bridge is there .

Thanks NiLuJe for your answer.

So at what point do I need to install Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install?

Now I upgraded to 5.4.5.1 and everything seems fine. I created the update.bin.tmp.partial folder on F:\ (base level on my kindle mounted as usb device) and installed KUAL and Back Door Lock and activated BDL.
Am I safe to exit airplane mode in order to download the french dictionary without being upgraded to 5.6.1?
