I was trying to jailbreak my Kindle. Unfortunately, it seems not possible with this version.

"Closed Kindle" jailbreak is only possible if previously jailbroken under a prior firmware version.

"Open(ed) Kindle" is always possible.

Oh, jailbreaking it for the first time? No, unfortunately not. If you are at 5.6.1.0.2 there is no way to jailbreak an vanilla device without opening its case, at least currently.

Check that.
You are probably now running as "framework" rather than "root"

Nope, I checked. Still root

Theoretical question (I don't need this right now, but who knows): since I'm root, I should technically be able to downgrade, right? Even through such a crude method as dd'ing 5.1.0's image.

Anyway, I installed backdoor lock, so no more surprise OTA updates for me.

Nearly all the time you see the phrase "downgrade" here, it is about using an earlier version of an Amazon firmware "update" package.

- - - - -

Of course, you can use the u-boot "erase all" command and start over (well, you can if your firmware does not have the buggy "erase all" command).
(Not recommended - please do not try it - but possible. There is a recent thread here by someone who did it (not on purpose) )

Hi,

I have a brand new Paperwhite (s/n begins 9017 so it's on "the list") which shipped with firmware 5.4.5.1. I successfully downgraded to 5.4.3.2 but when I've unpacked the kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip file into the Kindle's root dir, the "update your Kindle" link is greyed out. I've tried restarting it, clearing out the .sh files (the .bin gets deleted) and copying the files again but no joy.

I've successfully jailbroken an older Paperwhite so I thought I knew what I was doing, but I'm stumped now. Help please?

ta!
Dave

Using what application, on what OS?

Ah yes. For example, WinZip may obscurely stamp all over the line endings of unix-formatted text files.
This is generally only a problem to be wary of on Windows.
I would suggest using 7-Zip as your file unarchiver, it is the best in my experience.

This is using command-line unzip, on Ubuntu Linux. (14.04) I'll check if there's a version of 7-Zip for Linux.

You might find that actually RAR (RAR5) is the best, bot for speed and compression, but 7-zip comes close second. End OT.

command-line unzip works fine. Most people use Windows (bizarre, I know -- ArchLinux is so superior ) and most windows users are not used to using tar xvf/unzip -- that is when I suggest 7-Zip as a non-Cygwin Windows alternative.

WinRar is your choice between adware and paying for a meaningless distinction. And I prefer the 7-Zip GUI.

I have a thing about paying for free stuff.

Plus I usually use cygwin tar/unzip, but, err, maybe that's just me.

Basically, it is more about ease of use than speed tests, with me.
