Ok, if you have installed jailbreak 1.14 you can now upgrade to the last firmware and then using kual and mrinstaller you can install the screensaver hack or whatever you need!

Last firmware if that's what you want of course, it's not mandatory

Then if you don't wish to update your firmware any further, just install and activate BackDoorLock. (also you can create "update.bin.tmp.partial" folder when you simply connect it to via USB, but it's only additional precaution, and probably not needed anymore if you have BackDoorLock activated)
P.S. I hate OTA in general, I was ready to buy new device when they rolled 5.6.1 on me, and I couldn't use all the stuff. )) |

Yeah, and please note that update.bin.tmp.partial method does not work anymore with 5.6; I had that file at 5.6.1 and got updated to 5.6.1.0.2 nonetheless

Do you actually mean **FILE**? If so, then that was a user error, it should have been a directory of that name. OR Lab126 has discovered the difference between file unlink and directory delete. . . . . Its on FAT32 so we can't confuse them with the "immutable" attribute. . . . . How about making that name an active mount point? Let us see how long it takes them to discover an in-use (active) mount point with that name and deal with it. You have to do that either when you've ssh'ed into Kindle via USBNetwork or via Kterm, while the with "classic" method the average user could simply create it when connected in usb-storage mode. So this 'improvement' by lab126 takes away the real added value of this method: simplicity. If I am right, average users should find at that point more convenient to use the backdoorlock hack. Of course your suggestion still makes sense for academic purposes, and just-in-case lab126 renders the bdl hack useless too. |

I am pretty sure that MrPi runs as 'root' now - and of course the JB+MKK recovery thingy. So scripting the commands required (which do need to be run as 'root') to create a mount point blocker by Windows users should be possible. - - - - - PS: The above has already been discussed during the recent 5.6.x related updates to the JB+MKK package. So I can't take full credit for this suggestion. PPS: The decision was: "Later, if really required". Last edited by knc1; 12-28-2014 at 03:41 AM. |

Another question on 5.6.1.0.2:
After the OTA update, I lost usbnet. KUAL works, kterm works (I still have root), but usbnet doesn't because dropbear and other stuff installed under /usr/ are gone. Reinstalling it the usual way doesn't seem to work (even with the hold-down-the-power-button trick). I also tried to unpack the .bin file and run install.sh off /mnt/us/, but even though the script exited with status 0 it still didn't install dropbear etc. Can I get usbnet back (without downgrading)? |

You can have it back by reinstalling, but since fw 5.6.1 the only way to install hacks on kindle is to use MR Plugin Installer, a KUAL extension that will let you install plugins in a new (and more convenient) fashion. That's the only way to have usbnet back. |
