Once upon a time, the holy grail of formats was .lit

Then it was .prc, AKA mobi

Then it was .epub

So, guys, you're both wrong. The next holy grail of formats is something that probably doesn't exist yet.

Formats come, formats go. That's why you need to back up and de-DRM everything.

All this petty bickering is just that, petty.

(I still have books I originally bought in .lit format, I'm just sayin')

Mostly I don't care. I just think it would be easier to write transformations between different annotations schemes if each reader was using the same ebook file.

It doesn't even have to be a particular format, just so long as everyone agrees.

Wishful thinking.

On the other hand, maybe the next holy grail of formats will have builtin annotations specs.

I think one of the issues is that there hasn't a standard for this. I can (probably) translate between Kobo and Sony for epubs because they both use RMSDK. Calibre uses something based on the epub3 specs. It is different to the RMSDK method mainly in how which file the annotation is in is specified.

But, yes, translating between the positions for the same format is easy. Translating to another format is not something I want to think about.

Yes, it would have helped being able to move reading positions and highlights/bookmarks from my 650/T1 to to the H2O. As it is, the highlights/bookmarks were just for when I found an error I wanted to late go back and fix.

In fact, I still have not fixed the reading positions of some eBooks yet. If this could be done I'd use it.
