Ah I figured as much, fair enough.

Damn it. GTKSudoku is no longer working. Oh well, I got GTKMines and Eboard chess. I should probably stop adding junk and just use the paperwhite for what it's made for - reading.

As long as your computer is good enough to run it well, and some are.
I'd probably directly use Linux then. If I am "forced" to be in Windows, I assume I've got to do something with it... If I used a vm I'd be using it to do something in another machine (the host)... It would be too complicated probably. We would need something like wine to run unix command directly on the windows host... oh wait. That's cygwin.

Dig that. I've just bought some old stuff on Steam I've never played with (they create videogames much faster than I am able to play it):
Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Terraria, Valkyria Chronicles... I wish I'd be able to play on my Linux box, but at the moment it's a no-no.

pdf is natively supported on Kindle PW I believe.
It is, but as in all other readers, it kinda sucks with pdf. KOReader is faster.
Except I have recently discovered k2pdfopt which should be able to convert pdf files in a more readable page size for ebook readers. Still have to seriously test it.

Do you use KOReader instead of the native reader most of the time?
Better yet, I don't read pdfs on my kindle.
But yes, if I have to, I use KOReader. Also, KOreader reads epub, if I ever need to and I don't have calibre at hand to make the conversion.

I don't know about Stardict, I don't use dictionaries that much.

Exactly, I so much like it.

I think the thing about steam is, they'll run so many sales just so people will buy games but never play them, generating revenue pretty much out of nothing as it doesn't cost much to send out a digital copy of a game.

Ahh okay, I thought you used KOReader as a replacement reader in general.

Yeah that's true. I just wanted everything .

Yea I'm pretty much done, I think. I don't have enough motivation to learn Calibre and do whatever people were saying a few posts back. I'll look at them again when my book collection gets bigger than 6 books.

It's one thing to be enthusiastic, but it's another to actually be technically inclined enough to be able to follow these (some ancient) directions properly. Most people would either need to be spoon fed each and every step, or be fed up because they have no idea how to fill in the gaps, cause some of these instructions are a few years old and hard to find.

Indeed, if you think I bought Dead Space 1 & 2 for 6$... how could I possibly pass it up?
But, I also bought FIFA a couple months ago, and it wasn't cheap at all! It's also that having them digitally stored for me is so much handy... and on top of that, perphaps the most important thing, it's that nowadays the reality of gaming is online multiplayer: you can't do that with a cracked version anymore. Enough with the OT

Oh, but Calibre is AWESOME. You'd better start using it right now, even if for "standard" stuff. It's one great piece of software, it helps you a lot having your digital bookshelf tidy and organized even if you don't use the renaming and the lot... I'd check it out asap if I were you.

Yea I gotta spend time to learn it. Renaming would be the first thing I'd do considering I wanted to name my books by series. Already found the metadata plugboard stuff that eschwartz was talking about. The learning curve . And this utility would probably bring out the OCD in me to fill out everything.

My own laptop is Archlinux with the old WinXP partition shoved unceremoniously into a 9GB box/partition. It comes out for Adobe Digital Editions (rare) and that's it... and once MS spins out their newly open-sourced DotNET framework as a cross-platform support library, that may not be necessary anymore.

The school computers will not become linux though. Aafter a brief fling with Ubuntu, the volunteer sysadmin left and the office can just about handle a Windows server. And the chances of me using a VM in there are marginally better than their having a change of heart.

Cygwin is nice. But it is still a pain to manage user installs of calibre and other key apps, I hate and lack comprehension in scripting batch to do useful stuff, windows wget doesn't get trust-server-names, keybindings in cygwin are messed up by default...

Speaking of PC gaming and steam, it's nice to be able to run great games on linux, with less GUI ovehead. Uses the system resources for the game itself.

Ideally Steam would run directly on the tty with no window manager to clutter it up... must look into...

Which isn't such a bad thing to happen.
We have lost a lot of our talent over the past year to: "demands of a real life" -
The usual suspects are to blame:
Graduated - now have to find a real job ;
Changed jobs (or professions) ;
Hobby time disappeared among other demands of family (that one struck even our site owner - but the site survived and he's back) ;
Discovered species has more than one sex... ;
etc. etc.

We could use some replacements in our nerd ranks here.

Yeah, the problem is the usual one. There's no software.
Steam has a client and a few (well, more than a few) games for Linux. But most of them - and the more mainstream - have never and will never be ported to Linux so... your forced to stick with Windows in that case. :-/

I am a (sadly part-time) gamer and an amateur photographer. I need Lightroom/Photoshop 'cause I've been trained to use them, and the games. So I have Windows on my home computer. I also have a 4-years old computer set up as a Linux headless server ('cause my house is _small_ and I don't have space for 2 monitors, keyboards etc).
At work, I work for SAP, and we all have imaged pc's. And they're windows. There are a few hardcores who use Linux (in Italy, it's just one of us), but to get the installation compliant with the intranet requirements he had to dwelve into everything of it's Suse installation and it took him months. Plus, he always has outdated versions and "procedures" 'cause they're not developed or distributed to his laptop. I cannot afford that: I gotta work. That's one of the occasions I was talking about when I said someone is forced to use Windows.
