Shouldn't they all wait until Amazon starts shipping embedded Windows on the Kindle? |

Please substitute motorbike with "rocket to Saturn". That represents better the probability of Amazon realizing that on the Kindle.

Well, since all these Windows users are, for better or for worse, using arcane command-line stuff rather than nice friendly point-and-click stuff, perhaps they can go one step further and access that via
START+R ==> cmd ==> ssh kindle Since they are going to have to devolve to the command-line anyway. ![]() And I would rather use Cygwin as well, to make use of .ssh/config rather than storing keys in the registry ![]() |

Oh no, that would be like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
![]() Besides, vm are way slower, in principle, cause they have to emulate a processor. Cygwin or gow, they use unix command, but compiled natively for Windows environment. Your previous point quite makes sense however: they're going to use the command line anyway, so they could just use cmd to launch "ssh kindle". However, I think until they're "at home" they'd prefer sticking with their (Windows) way to do things. And using putty isn't that complex when you have setup your connection. You open putty, double click on your "Kindle" entry and you're in. You can even make an icon that connects directly to it, if you like. That's two different philosophies. I use both, but in my experience, those who knows sufficiently well only one of them, will tend to be VERY reluctant to change their status. ![]() |

Haha you guys are funny. It's interesting watching you guys debate over what I use to access this stuff. I actually previously learned super basic Linux command lines, which were: copy/paste, navigate through directories, make new files, delete files, making files read/writeable, and a bit about mount/unmounting, but that's basically it. I tried forcing myself to use ubuntu before, but either the functionality wasn't quite there for whatever reason for school purposes, or I didn't have enough time/anyone to teach me. I'm also a PC gamer, so there's that too.
pdf is natively supported on Kindle PW I believe. Do you use KOReader instead of the native reader most of the time? It seems almost the same (at first glance) in terms of features, except for the OCR feature which I'm not sure if Kindle PW has. I tried extracting stardict but it has been giving me problems (unexpected end of archive, file is broken). The file is also 2.67GB which makes me think twice about keeping KOReader (I'd want the optional dictionary if I keep it). Is there any to have it point to Amazon's pre-loaded dictionaries or make it smaller? Edit: I'm assuming 2.67GB is a bunch of languages, not just English. What is the purpose of the "no framework" versions of the start filemanager/open document? Quote:
Would probably annoy me after a while, but it kind of feels more polished than skipstone and it has adblock/other extensions. Is there any way to use the browser portrait mode and any way to replace the experimental browser button to link to skipstone (may be asking too much for this one)? I take it back, screensaver mod is nice even with the magnetic cover; can still be briefly seen after opening it. Last edited by Spartan117H3; 12-05-2014 at 12:19 AM. |

Yeah I saw the meaning of the patch from a thread a few years old and edited my post accordingly. Hmm, it says on the search bar, and for kindle touch, not PW. My search bar looks a bit different, and is a popup rather than a full top of the screen type thing so I'm not sure if it will work. I guess there's no way to change the settings menu and replace the experimental browser button with one of the aftermarket browsers. Edit: Skipstone is designed to run in landscape mode, so no to that unless I want to go in and edit it. Last edited by Spartan117H3; 12-04-2014 at 11:59 PM. |

It will indeed work on the PW as well, it is the same basic idea with a few extra buttons.
No, nobody that I know of has edited the menu dropdown. Oh, trust me I have tried midori a variety of ways, the main problem is every time I get it to open it hangs endlessly on every action, taking ages. I have no idea WHY. |

Oh. Reading the wiki, it says I should make a backup, but it also says for the PW, it's all included with the rescue pack. But reading the rescue pack, it just allows access to SSH when crap hits the fan, there's no backup of what's recommended (partition 1 and 2), do I need to do that, or is there no point because you can't access "firmware flash"/ "usb downloader" mode? |

I wouldn't bother with it. As long as you have access to diags mode through the Rescue Pack, you can simply flash the images provided by ixtab, at least in 99.999% of cases
